1 Prevent Slips, Trips, and Falls Slips, trips, and falls are a major cause of preventable injuries and deaths on the jobsite. They can result in sprains, strains, bruises, abrasions, cuts, and broken bones, not to mention lost wages, out-of-pocket medical expenses, pain, and a poor quality of life. It s important for you to think about where slip, trip, and fall hazards exist on the jobsite and how you can control them. Slip, trip, and fall hazards are everywhere on the job. Here is a short list of some of the most common hazards: Wet, oily, muddy, or greasy floors. Holes, ruts, and uneven surfaces. Dry floors covered in sawdust. Loose tiles, brick pavers, rugs, or mats. Ladders, stairs, scaffolds, roofs, elevator shafts, and incomplete floors, stairways, and walls. Slips, trips, and falls are preventable. Follow these safe work practices as you go about your day. Wear the right shoe or boot for the job. Tennis shoes, heels, flip-flops, and sandals are not appropriate footwear on a construction site. Wear good work boots with slip-resistant soles. Keep footwear clean and free from mud, grease, and oil. Tie up your laces. If you notice a co-worker with untied shoelaces dragging on the ground, let them know. Follow good housekeeping practices. Clean up as you work. Reduce leftover parts, scrap, and clean-up time by taking only the supplies you ll need for the job. Dispose of NOTES: SPECIAL TOPICS /EMPLOYEE SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS/NOTES: trash and scrap throughout your shift. Don t leave the mess till the end of your shift or the end of the week. If you spill grease, oil, or another liquid, wipe it up immediately to prevent a slip hazard. Sweep up dust, chips, and shavings. Put tools, cords, equipment, etc., away when they re not in use so they don t become tripping hazards. Keep work areas well-lit. Walkways, halls, and staircases should be brightly-lit. Illumination is important in parking areas, for personal safety, and to prevent falls. Report burnt-out lights and dark areas. Lighting will be more important as the days get shorter. Stay on top of hazardous conditions caused by changing weather, like rain, sleet, ice, or snow. Even wet leaves or pine needles can cause you to slip or fall. Keep outdoor surfaces clean and dry. Use bright, adhesive, anti-slip tape or paint to help make steps easier to see both indoors and outdoors. Set up Wet Floor signs where the floor is wet to give workers a visual reminder to step carefully. Stay vigilant and focused as you walk around the jobsite. Don t look at your phone as you walk. Don t carry loads that block your view. Pay attention to your surroundings. SAFETY REMINDER Highly-polished floors can be slick, even when they re dry; watch your step. Foggy or misty conditions can make it difficult to see the path ahead; tread carefully. Agujeros, ranuras, y superficies irregulares. MEETING DOCUMENTATION JOB NAME: MEETING DATE: ATTENDEES: S.A.F.E.
