ATTENDANCE LINE If your child will be late to school or absent, please call the Eagleview attendance line at ( ) before 8:00 AM on the day of the absence. Please record the following information: Student name and teacher name Who is calling Reason for absence/tardy Request for homework, if needed ATTENDANCE INFORMATION Consistent school attendance is critical to the educational success of your child. Our school s attendance goal, which follows state guidelines, is nine or fewer affected days for the school year. Please note the following attendance policies pertaining to Eagleview. For the full District 12 attendance policy, please see: Teachers inform administration when absences become a factor that may be contributing to a lack of academic progress. Excused absences are those resulting from illness, injury, non-emergency medical/dental appointments, religious observances, family emergencies, or other reasons as specified by the law. Excused absences are still reflected in total absences. Excessive Excused Absences are defined as more than 10 absences in a year: Absences excused but occurring in such quantity as to affect academic performance or student grades May result in teacher or building administrator conference or may be referred to a District Attendance Hearing Officer if affecting success and building interventions have been ineffective Unexcused Absences: No communication has been received from parents regarding absence. An attempt will be made to contact parents if a student is absent and not excused. Four unexcused absences in a month and/or ten unexcused absences in a year is considered truancy. Habitual truancy may include a referral to Truancy Court of the 17 th Judicial District and/or a referral to a social service agency. Notification of upcoming absences: Parents are encouraged to notify the school office whenever absences are known in advance using the Notification of Upcoming Absence form, which is available in the office. It is important to note that these absences do count towards a student s overall attendance total including determination of excessive excused absences and if these absences affect student academic progress and grades. Attendance is taken at after school activities if your student is at school but will not be attending the after school activity please call the school Children arriving at school after 7:45 AM need to come to the office for a tardy pass before going to the classroom. The tardy will be recorded as UNEXCUSED unless a parent accompanies the child into the building or leaves a message on the attendance line. PLEASE CALL THE ATTENDANCE LINE

COMMUNICATION The Eagleview staff is dedicated to a home/school communication that shows strong commitment to our shared responsibility for student success. To that end, we encourage open and frequent communication. is the preferred method of communication for ALL staff members and will typically result in a quicker response time. Communication with the classroom teacher: Consider your child s teacher as the first line of communication. Your child s teacher knows your child better than anyone in the school and has information regarding what happens during the school day. Every teacher sets up an individual system through which they communicate with parents, including take-home folders, student planners, journals, e- mail and/or voice mail. Please make sure you understand how this works in your child s classroom. Being responsive to your needs requires our undivided attention and we value your input. Therefore, please keep in mind that right before school and right after school are very busy times for Eagleview staff members and this is not a time that teachers are asked or expected to engage in individualized conversations about your student. These types of conversations are necessary, but need to be scheduled either with the teacher or with support from the office staff. It is a priority for all Eagleview staff to try to preserve the integrity of classroom instructional time for all students. Therefore, during instructional time teacher s classroom phones will be forwarded directly to their voic , please call the main office for any time sensitive information. Communication from the school: A monthly newsletter, the Eagleview Update, is filled with information regarding upcoming events and general information. This newsletter is ed to parents who have provided an address and is also available on-line at Often, important information will be sent home with your child in the Friday Folder. Check this folder each week for important information from the teacher and the school. Visit Eagleview s web page at or Facebook Page: Communication to problem solve: When conflicts or concerns arise, it can be a challenge to maintain a positive relationship throughout the problem solving process. Please contact your child s teacher or a school administrator when a situation arises. This will give us an opportunity to gather complete and accurate information about the situation and to focus the solution on what is best for the child. Eagleview staff will work with parents to resolve any conflicts that might arise. We seek an environment that is safe from harassment and intimidation. Therefore, all staff, students and parents are expected to act in a manner that is respectful and focused on solutions. No retaliation can occur against students or family members who voice concerns or file grievances. Students, families and community members can be heard by the Board of Education when internal procedures have been exhausted.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION SUPPORT (PBIS) PBIS is a proactive systems approach to school- wide discipline. A clear set of behavior expectations for each area of the school is taught through PBS videos, so the students know and understand what is expected of them at Eagleview Elementary School. They are expected to SOAR in all areas of the school! S stands for safety--o stands for organized A stands for having a good attitude and R stands for responsibility. Students are rewarded for following those school wide expectations in two ways: 1) Whole classes that are following the SOAR expectations can be rewarded by receiving a green eaglebuck. A class will earn a class eaglebuck party once they have collected 30 eaglebucks. 2) Students that are following the SOAR expectations can receive a BLUE eaglebuck. There is a weekly drawing of individual eaglebucks and selected students are able to come to the office for a prize. At the end of each month, student s names from each grade level are drawn and they receive a SOAR T-Shirt. RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS (RAK) During the school year we will implement and partner with a local organization called Random Acts of Kindness. The purpose of this work is to bring an emphasis to the social and emotional needs of our students and develop strong supports and structures that teach students the importance of kindness, acceptance and thoughtfulness. For more information on RAK, please visit, DISCIPLINE POLICY The Eagleview staff is committed to helping all students develop appropriate social behaviors and good citizenship skills. Consistent rules and policies help provide a safe learning environment in which all children can learn, although each incident is given individual consideration. School Discipline Policy Eagleview Staff will adhere to Superintendent s Policy 5000 (student discipline) that recognizes the need to provide an educational environment for students which is safe, conducive to the learning process, and free from unnecessary disruption. Staff will establish and enforce rules for students conduct as set forth in Superintendent Policy 5000 and communicate such rules to students and their parents/custodians and legal guardians, as well as the fact that violations of such rules shall result in disciplinary actions. Principles of fundamental fairness and procedural due process will govern the regulation of student conduct. (Superintendent Policy 5000) Stop and Think= This is a tool we use to manage minor infractions handled by classroom teacher-parent is informed and must sign form. This information is not recorded within Infinite campus. Formal referral= This is a tool we use either when a student has accumulated 3 or more Stop and Think forms or if the infraction rises to a serious level as outlined within our behavior matrix. Students receiving a formal referral are escorted to office to meet with administration. Parents are contacted and consequences are generally given by administration.

Primary Discipline Responsibilities Primary responsibility for discipline will rest with the instructional staff: Classroom teachers will handle incidents within the classroom and transition times. Outside the classroom, any staff member may discipline a child who is acting inappropriately and may not be under the direct supervision of his/her classroom teacher. Major or on-going infractions will be referred to the school administrators. Positive Reinforcement Programs Individual classroom recognition programs Assemblies to honor student achievement Eagle bucks weekly drawing Student of the month Positive Referrals with phone calls home SAFETY OF STUDENTS You can assist Eagleview staff in providing for the safety of all students by: Providing up-to-date information: Call the school attendance line when your child will be late to school or absent. Notify the school office when you have a change in home, work, or emergency phone numbers. Providing a safe trip to school and home again: See that your child does not arrive at school before 7:30 AM and leaves the school grounds promptly when school is dismissed. Determine a meeting place in the event that parents are running late. Students not picked up 10 minutes after school dismisses should return to the office. If your child walks home, have him/her walk with a group. Teach your child never to talk to or respond to a stranger, but to keep walking fast. Encourage students to tell an adult if a person they do not know talks to them or invites them to go somewhere or do something. Keep watch in your neighborhood and on the route to and from school. Organize neighbors to take turns walking children to and from school. Report suspicious activities to the Thornton police (during the day, after hours and on weekends). Follow Eagleview s Rules of the Road and exercise extreme caution when driving near the school. Observe and use crosswalks when crossing streets and parking lots with students. Always yield to crossing guard. U-turns are prohibited in front of the school on Summit Grove Parkway 8

STUDENT DRESS CODE We encourage you to read the Adams 12 dress code policy (Superintendent Policy 5060) as all students are responsible for the following these guidelines. The following guidelines are the most prevalent within the elementary school. Students who are not in compliance with dress code will be subject to consequences outlined below: Shirts must be long enough to touch the top of the lower garment and/or be tucked in. All attired should be sized to fit without exposing undergarments, buttocks, stomachs or cleavage. Shorts and skirts must be knuckle length when arms are resting at sides. Shoes must be worn at all times. Hats and caps as appropriate for the weather, except as otherwise prohibited under this procedure, may be worn on school grounds, but must be removed when the student enters the building. Roller shoes are not permitted. In the event that a child arrives at school wearing attire prohibited under district policy, the student will be asked to turn the item or clothing inside out for the remainder of the school day or change into school provided clothing or parents will be called to bring alternative attire. If the student continues to wear prohibited attire, the school s disciplinary procedure will be followed. This district dress code policy also applies to Halloween costumes. BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL BEFORE SCHOOL Parents are reminded that sending children early or dropping them off early could be encouraging a very dangerous situation, as there is no adult supervision on the school grounds before 7:30 AM. Before school, staff members are preparing for the school day; for this reason, staff members are not available to supervise before 7:30 AM. It is understandable that parents sometimes have to leave for work before this safe drop-off time. Should this be the case, please have an alternative plan in place by arranging with a relative, friend or neighbor to deliver your child to school no earlier than 7:30. There are also a number of commercial day-care establishments that will transport children to Eagleview. The tardy bell does not ring until 7:45; this schedule allows all children to enter the building and arrive in the classroom on time. AFTER SCHOOL It is very important that children be picked up on time when school dismisses at 2:30 (1:15 every Wednesday). Teachers are assigned to designated supervision areas for ten minutes and are not available to monitor children after school has dismissed. The office staff will call a parent when a child has not been picked up; the parent is then responsible to either come to school for the child or to communicate with the daycare provider or relative and ask that they come to Eagleview. Always have a Plan B (pick-up by relative, friend or neighbor) in place for those times when after-school plans change. For the safety of all students, it is essential that they are picked up on time when school is dismissed. WHEN THE BELL RINGS Students may not exit through the front doors. Students must exit with their class using designated dismissal routes. Students should have a pre-planned area to meet siblings. 9

EMERGENCY CLOSURE INFORMATION Information on emergency school closures (due to severe overnight storms or other emergency situations) is available on local television stations; please listen for announcements concerning Adams 12 Five Star Schools, Adams 12, or Northglenn/Thornton. Information is also available on the district website: LOST AND FOUND Please remember to check the lost and found for any items your child may have misplaced. Clothing items are in the green basket near the gym. Small items, including eyeglasses, keys, jewelry, etc. may be claimed in the office. Periodically, all unclaimed lost and found items are donated to charity. RECESS Students may participate in either a morning or an afternoon recess in addition to the lunch recess period. Indoor recess will be held if: Significant snow, rain, sleet or hail is falling Lightning is occurring Temperature with wind-chill is 20 or less Playground conditions are poor (mud, snow, ice, or standing water) Students should come to school prepared to go outside for recess. During the colder months, they should bring: Warm coats Mittens or gloves Head covering Waterproof footwear Students must have a doctor s note in order to be allowed to remain inside during recess. PERSONAL ITEMS AT SCHOOL Due to lack of storage within the building, skateboards and roller blades should remain at home. Bicycles must be walked on school grounds, and then locked in the bike rack. Scooters may be ridden to school only if they are then locked securely to the bike rack; there is not storage space in the school for scooters. Students are asked not to bring toys of any type (balls, trading cards, stuffed animals, personal CD players, ipods, etc.) unless for a special classroom activity. They should remain in student backpacks until needed for class activity; the student accepts the responsibility for keeping the item safe. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Students who forget homework or personal items in the classroom after school has dismissed for the day will not be allowed to retrieve them unless the teacher is in the room and gives permission. Students should stop by the office and a member of the office staff will attempt to contact the teacher for his/her OK. 10

USE OF TELEPHONE AT SCHOOL Parents are asked to refrain from calling their child or the child s teacher during the instructional day. Eagleview s office staff will deliver emergency messages to students. Please assist us by making arrangements for after-school pick-up and day-care prior to your child leaving for school in the morning. Students will be permitted to use the telephone when necessary as permitted by staff. Students will not be allowed to use the phone to make after-school social arrangements. CELL PHONES Emergency use of cell phones by students is permitted with the following stipulations: For ordinary school days, students may have cell phones in their possession. Phones must be turned off and stored where deemed appropriate by the classroom teacher. Cell phones will be confiscated if students do not adhere to these procedures and must be picked up in the office by a parent. Any student who is caught using cell phones in an inappropriate manner as subject to disciplinary action up to and including contacting law enforcement. During CMAS test times, no cell phones will be permitted in the testing room. However, phones may be turned into the office with the owner s name securely attached. Students may pick up the phone at the end of the day. STUDENTS WITH ALLERGIES Many of our students suffer from mild to severe food allergies or diabetes. Eagleview s staff would like to be as diligent and dedicated to keeping students with food concerns safe as we are in maintaining a secure environment. In an effort to help teachers, students and parents monitor a potentially dangerous situation we have decided to put into place a safe food policy. We all enjoy eating the delicious homemade items that many of you put much time into preparing, we are now going to require that all food brought for school treats contain their nutritional content and a food ingredient list, so we are able to ensure the safety of all students. PARENTS AND VISITORS AT SCHOOL Under Colorado School Law {CRS (7)} all visitors (parents, visitors, district employees) to schools in Colorado must sign in. Any parent, visitor, or non-eagleview district employee entering Eagleview Elementary School needs to sign-in at the transaction window in the school office. Please also wear a visitor badge in a visible location on your clothing. For the protection of all Eagleview students and staff, you will be asked to return to the office if you are not signed in and wearing a visitor badge. All outside doors will remain locked throughout the school day. All visitors are required to enter the building only through the front doors using the buzzer system and sign-in at the window. Should you exit through a door other than the front door, please make sure it securely closes behind you. 11

BASE families are asked to enter through the northeast door by the gym and it will be the only door open to access the building. Movement of students and visitors through this door will be monitored by a BASE staff member. VOLUNTEERING AT EAGLEVIEW In an effort to promote a strong volunteer program that provides a safe, accountable and supportive school environment, it is important for you to be aware of the following before your first day of service: Volunteers perform the following important services at Eagleview: classroom assistance, class parties, field trip chaperones, PTO projects, bookroom support, lunch supervision, field day, student store, crosswalk, bookfair, musical performance support, FLIGHT classes and more. All adults volunteering at Eagleview must be trained. Volunteer training is now available online. o To access the training, simply go to the Eagleview website, click on volunteers from the menu on the left, and click on volunteer orientation training (Power Point presentation). o Once you have completed the training, print the code of conduct form located on the last slide and bring it, along with your driver s license, to our main office to receive your volunteer badge. Volunteer trainings will still be offered at Eagleview Elementary by appointment. You are also welcome to view the online training at Eagleview if you do not have access to the internet. Remember, all adults must complete the volunteer training in order to work in the school in any capacity. (This includes parents and/or grandparents who attend field trips.) Every year after you are trained you must complete a new volunteer application. Applications are available in the office. If you were trained previously, you do not need to be retrained. In an effort to support the confidentiality of students and to ensure the highest quality of instruction, we ask that volunteers limit their time in the classrooms to no more than two hours a couple of times a week. We greatly appreciate all the help and support you provide our school. CHECKING STUDENTS OUT DURING THE SCHOOL DAY A parent or his/her designee must sign out a child leaving during the day; authorization to leave school during the day must come from the parent or guardian. Designee must be on the authorized to check-out list. Children will not be allowed to walk home alone during the school day. You may not leave the school grounds during the school day with a child who is not yours unless the office has written permission from the child s parent and you properly sign the child out. We cannot accept phone permission for you to check out a child who is not yours. If an adult is on your child s authorized to check-out list, he/she may check out your child without written permission. 12

HEALTH AND WELLNESS PRACITCES We believe in the overall health and wellbeing of all students and you will find that we offer a wide variety of activities that encourage healthy living for our students and community. We are making adjustments to our birthday treats and rewards systems so that fun and positivity are still encouraged, but not always rewarded with food. Please be on the lookout for a menu of options that we will utilize with students, families and teachers in order to continue to celebrate in a healthy way. A Balanced Approach to Learning Outside of School: Eagleview s Learning Practice/Homework Policy The teaching staff at Eagleview believes that homework can be important because it is a valuable aid in helping students make the most of their experience in school. We assign homework because it is useful in reinforcing what has been learned in class, preparing students for up-coming lessons, extending and generalizing concepts, teaching responsibility, and helping students develop positive study habits. We believe homework is a partnership between teachers, students and parents. Extra practice/homework can increase student achievement if we all take an active role. Teachers will assign extra practice and homework throughout the school week that is appropriate for the age, grade and academic level of the students. In addition to intellectual skill practice, the brain and body requires physical activity. Based on research out of Columbia University, Exercise directly impacts the behavior and development of the brain. It is likely that the effects of physical activity on cognition would be particularly important in the highly developing brains of youth. Additionally, exercise may affect executive functioning of the brain by providing, increased oxygen flow to the brain and increased brain neurotransmitters. Physical activity has benefits beyond improved grades, too. Drop-out rates were lower for youth who consistently participated in interscholastic sports. (Charles Basch) So it is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED that ALL students engage in a minimum of 60 minutes daily of physical activity outside of school. Teachers will: Assign appropriate homework aligned with curricular standards and connected to in-class instruction. Analyze patterns in practice to determine next steps for instruction. Explain homework expectations and directions in advance. Modify homework based on individual student needs or grade level. Provide positive structures to reinforce practice and strong study habits. Students will: Complete and turn in practice/homework according to timelines. Do homework to the best of their ability thoroughly, thoughtfully, and neatly. Ask for clarification if an assignment or its due date is not understood. Parents are encouraged to: 14

Establish an extra practice/homework routine and emphasize the importance of strong study habits and practice as part the learning process. Provide an environment (space, time, appropriate supplies) that is conducive for their child s learning success. Provide support for their child/children with homework and encourage independence as ability grows. Reach out to the teacher if the student is experiencing persistent struggles with homework. Vacations: It is inevitable that at some point during a student s elementary experience they may miss some days of school due to family vacations. While it is encouraged to minimize vacations during the year and utilize the time students are naturally out of school, it is understood that a school schedule is not always conducive to family work schedules. Because it isn t possible for students to make-up the instruction that was missed during their absences, we ask that parents not request, work packets from teachers. In the event that your student does miss school due to a vacation, the following are encouraged: Make the most of the experience by engaging in the learning that can occur from being in a new place. Students may create or compile a photo and/or written journal documenting their experience. Visit our local Anythink public library and they will provide a vacation bag filled with fun and engaging learning for your student throughout their time away. PETS AT SCHOOL In accordance with district policy, pets are not permitted on school grounds whether leashed or not. Please refrain from bringing pets on property at all times. DELIVERIES AT SCHOOL In order to create and maintain an educational setting which values learning and to cause the least disruption to the school day, we ask that parents not send deliveries to students at school. Items that are delivered will remain in the school office until the end of the school day. FIELD TRIPS 15

Grade levels offer various field trips that enhance the curriculum. Teachers will select volunteers on an as-needed basis to accompany the class on a trip, offering the opportunity to as many parents as possible. Volunteers are responsible for the safety of all children assigned to their group. All volunteers, including field trip chaperones, are required to complete a one-time training session this PowerPoint is online on the Eagleview website, complete a code of conduct each year. Only Eagleview students in that particular grade level will be allowed to attend the field trip. Parent volunteers may not bring siblings or guests. A signed district permission slip must be submitted before any child may attend a field trip. A note from the parent is not an acceptable substitute for the permission slip. A child who rides the bus on the field trip must return on the bus unless alternative arrangements have been made prior to the trip. CAFETERIA INFORMATION Eagleview s cafeteria serves a nutritious lunch each day or students may elect to bring a sack lunch from home. If students wish to purchase lunch, they may bring money on a daily basis or pay in advance. If paying in advance, please send a check for the number of days desired, payable to Eagleview Cafeteria. Indicate on the check your child s name and computer lunch number. Please call the kitchen ( ) if you have a question about lunch or lunch money. You can now add money to your child s meal and snack account via the Internet using a certified, secure, third-party provider, SchoolPassport.com. 17 OLDEST OR ONLY PROCEDURE At Eagleview, we send home all-school publications (newsletter, menu, parent group flyers, important announcements, etc.) with the oldest or only child in each family. For example, if your 4 th grader is the oldest of your three children who attend Eagleview, he/she will be the one who brings home most allschool publications for your family. If you only have one child in this school, he/she will be given the publication. By limiting publications to one per family, we are able to significantly reduce the amount of paper we process and send home. DISTRIBUTION OF NON-DISTRICT MATERIALS Requests are frequently made for Eagleview to distribute information and advertising to the community through school processes such as the Friday Take-Home Folder. The District policy Distribution of Non-District Related Materials has been revised. (Policy ) Materials that will be sent home with students include school and/or district related materials: Materials produced by the school, district, instructional staff or Board of Education Materials produced and/or sponsored by the school parent group or other schoolestablished organization Materials produced by a government entity (including cities) Non-school and/or district related materials will be distributed at Eagleview in these two ways: Making flyers available at the school s community resources area in the front lobby Designating the second Friday in September and the second Friday in January when materials of organizations will be sent home with students. Please note that even if a student has a signed permission slip, he/she will not be permitted to visit during the school day. MEDIA WAIVER/INTERNET PUBLISHING There may be times during the school year when different media groups (newspapers, television, university, school production class, district public 17

relations, etc.) will cover activities or various events with articles, video or still photography that may be published either in print on online. In addition, schools or the district may want to include school-oriented articles, video or photography on their own websites/facebook pages. If parents DO NOT want their child(ren) to be photographed or videotaped for news media or school publicity purposes, please request and opt-out media form from your child s school. Complete that form and return it to your school s office so that the school has a record of your request that your child(ren) are not to be photographed or videotaped by news media or for school district publicity. District photographers will make every reasonable effort to identify the primary subjects in photographs and to not publish photos containing students on the opt-out list. This form will be good for the current school year only. This policy relates to classroom activities or school events that are not already open to the public. Public events such as sporting events, theatre productions, etc. are considered open to the public and photographers and videographers are not included in this policy. STUDENT FEES Adams 12 Five Star School District instituted a textbook/material/supply fee that is assessed to all students. The fee for elementary students is $45. This fee is non-refundable. All district and school fees can be paid online at or payment can be made at individual school sites. Parents will receive monthly communication, from the district, regarding student fee balance. Field trip fees can be paid online. These fees will be posted to the student account in advance of the field trip. Yearbooks may be paid for on line; you need to select the yearbook fee. State law, C.R.S (1), -110(o), -117(2)(6), allows for such a fee. It states school districts can charge fees for textbooks and supplies. In addition, Colorado law requires the district to exempt this fee for students who receive free or reduced lunch benefits pursuant to C.R.S (1)(u). RETURNED CHECK POLICY If any check written to Eagleview is returned by the bank for any reason, it is submitted again to the check writer s bank. If it again declined, it will be presented to an independent check recovery company. If no payment is made by the check writer, the check will be sent to collections. The check writer is responsible for all bank and collection fees. Eagleview is not able to accept payment for declined checks. See the school office manager for further details. 18
