1 of 20 9/21/ :06 AM Principal's Message 08/18/2015 by Doug Ely Dear North Families, October will be a very busy and fun month here at North. Our North Halloween Fund Run Party fundraiser will kick off with an assembly on Thursday, October 8 th, and will culminate with the 2015 Halloween FUNd RUN Party event here at the North Walking Trail on Friday, October 30 th. The Dutch Bros. Party rigs will be here at school that day, and it will be a festive Fun Run and Halloween Costume Party event. Following the kick-off assembly on October 8 th, you will be able to go the North Middle School Web Page to find information about how you and family members can make pledges for the Halloween FUNd RUN Party by using credit cards online. Our students will be seeking flat donations (not by the lap). At North, our wonderful PTA group will only seek donations from our families and community members two times all school year. The second and final fundraiser will be the 2 nd Annual North Variety (talent) Show and Silent Auction to be held at the GPHS Performing Arts Center on Friday, April 15 th. Please mark these dates on your calendars. In the month of October, there will be some non-school days coming up that students will look forward to, but will also require some planning for parents. Friday, October 9 th is the annual Oregon Statewide Inservice Day (there will be no school for all Grants Pass School District #7 schools). On Friday, October 23rd, it will be a no school day for students (that will be a ½ day Staff Development/ ½ day Clerical Day for Staff). Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday, November 4 th and Thursday, November 5 th, from 4:00-7:30pm. Due to the two evening conference format, Friday, November 6 th will be No School Day for Students and Teachers. The office will be open regular hours that day. More information will be sent to you through the use of a mass like this one as we get closer to the time for scheduling conferences. Please check our North Middle School Website-Athletics page for all of the Cross Country Information and Schedule for this year. PTSA 09/04/2015 by Carrie Bernhart Welcome back North families! We are gearing up for another great year. The PTSA at North has the privilege of supporting many great reward programs, learning opportunities and family events at North Middle School. Some of those are the Welcome BBQ, Student Leadership, North Star and Rising Star Student monthly awards, student programs, activity and enrichment programs, the 8th grade dance and BBQ, and all of the End of the Year activities. You can see our complete budget on the PTSA section of the school s website. As we look ahead, please mark your calendars for the North Fund Run that will kick off on October 8th. Our Fund Run event this year will have a Halloween theme and will take place on Friday, October 30th. The only way to get to wear your costume at school is to participate in the Fund Run. This year in addition to Dutch Bros. Baristas coming to run with us, we ll have music, a photo booth, games, treats and raffle prizes. Don t miss it! It s going to be a fun party! The main fundraising efforts at North this year will consist of two major events: The Fund Run in October and the Variety Show and Silent Auction in April. The Fund Run is North s version of a Jog-a-thon, and the Variety Show showcases the talents of our North students and is held at the Grants Pass High School Performing Arts Center. Along with those events, we also collect Box Tops. There are collection sheets in the office to make it easier, or you can turn them in loose in a Ziploc. Either way, there s candy in the office for anyone bringing in 10 or more Box Tops! Another great way to support North is to link your Fred Meyer Rewards Card with the North Middle School PTSA (#90695). Fred Meyer has pledged to match a portion of the rewards you earn and send them directly to North. You still get all of your rewards, fuel points, and coupons, but they send an additional amount to the school. Just visit to link up your card. Last year we partnered with and it worked out well for North. You just use this site to shop and the merchants return a percentage of your purchases directly to North. All they need is your first name and address. From there, you re able to shop online with more than 500 participating merchants - including Amazon, Macys, Best Buy, Hot Topic, Expedia, etc. - and North earns money. The percentages range from 1% to 7%, but it adds up, and every little bit helps. The PTSA meets on the first Tuesday of the month at noon. We are a student-included organization so our student body is welcome at our meetings and able to join our membership if they d like to have a vote at the

4 of 20 9/21/ :06 AM meetings. The membership fee for PTSA is $10. You can like" us on Facebook to keep up to date on what s going on with the PTSA at North! Also, we will be on the school s new website soon. On this site you will be able to see our meeting minutes and our budget. Here s to a GREAT year at North Middle School! Sometimes, it takes a village... 09/15/2015 by North Staffer Sometimes, it does take a village. Some of our students need school supplies that their families cannot afford at the time. If you have new or gently used binders, zipper pouches, backpacks, dividers, protractors, calculators, pens, pencils, paper, general school supplies, etc., please consider donating to our school. We will keep the supplies on hand for students as they need them. Thank you. For more information, contact the counseling office at the school.

5 of 20 9/21/ :06 AM Successful Middle Schoolers 09/15/2015 by North Staffer "What can I do to help my child be successful in middle school?" This is a question often asked by parents. Here are a few answers: - Make sure your student gets at least eight hours of sleep. (Some parents think that their child is sleeping, but actually the child is texting or watching TV in their room)! - Make sure your child gets a good breakfast either at home or at school. - Make sure homework gets done each night. If your child says (they) don't have any practice learning assignments, call or your student's teachers immediately! (This is especially common with boys in-particular)! - Help your child to strike a balance: Youth group is important. Sports are important. Maybe they have music or dance lessons. But when your student's grades are falling, or they seem to lack energy or get sick often, or your child's behavior at home is changing, it's possible that their schedule needs to be re-balanced. Feel free to check with the counseling department at North whether other students are balancing as many activities as your student is. -North Middle Staffer Yearbook App 09/15/2015 by Brandie Henderson New This Year! Nurse's Notes by Martha Covrig NURSE S NOTES NURSE S NOTES NURSE S NOTES NURSE S NOTES NURSE S NOTES Students with asthma, allergies, heart problems, diabetes, seizures, and other conditions should have a health protocol on file to provide guidelines for their health and safety at school. If your child has one or more of the above conditions, but does not have a protocol, please ask office staff for the appropriate protocol form, complete it and return it to the school. If your child already has a protocol on file at school and there are no changes, you will just need to complete the returning student statement on the Emergency Contact and Health Information form (with your registration papers) to continue use of that protocol. If there are changes in your child s protocol on file at school, please obtain and complete a new protocol for the school.
