1 LAUSD PARENT ENGAGEMENT TASK FORCE MEETING Parent and Family Center Resource Curriculum Working Group February 14, 2011 Los Angeles Unified School District 333 S. Beaudry Avenue, Room Los Angeles, CA :15 12:00 p.m. Welcome and Introductions Chris Downing called the meeting to order at 10:15 a.m. and the group reviewed the overall purpose and February 7 th notes from all four Working Groups. Input, Discussion and Action on Draft Framework for All Parent and Family Center Resource Curriculum The group had a discussion and reviewed the Working Group s draft framework. Mr. Downing reiterated the information given by Antonia Hernandez in the 9 a.m. taskforce meetings and led the group in reviewing a template which requires that groups identify the following: Identify three strategies, per year, that utilizes the existing Parent Engagement Toolkit and will include the development of additional curriculum Identify delivery models for the curriculum Identify parameters for effective implementation The recommendations of the group are attached. Next Steps Mr. Downing reviewed all of the recommendations that were given by the group to seek consensus on the items identified for priority and inclusion. Public Comments Two persons provided public comment and the meeting was adjourned.

4 LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT PARENT ENGAGEMENT TASK FORCE Parent and Family Center Resource Curriculum Framework The Parent and Family Center Resource Curriculum utilizes the existing Parent Engagement Toolkit and will include the development of additional curriculum that will aid parents in participating and fully supporting their children s education. Identify three strategies, per year, that utilizes the existing Parent Engagement Toolkit and will include the development of additional curriculum Identify delivery models for the curriculum Identify parameters for effective implementation Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 The District will develop Positive Behavior Support trainings to include Anger Management; Prevention of Bullying; Ant--Gang Violence; Drug Prevention; and Preventing and Reporting Child Abuse. Group the Toolkit by appropriate school levels and develop and implement a Transitional training for each level. Implement beginning of the year surveys, within the first 4 weeks of school, to prioritize trainings based on the school s comprehensive needs assessment. The District will develop Parent Involvement for Student Success curricula including Understanding Data; Universal Access Strategies; and Homework Support. The District will implement effective Welcoming Environment training at all schools. Develop a workshop planning document and sample lesson plan to provide consistent delivery of training curricula. Develop and implement translated materials on a Toolkit DVD. The District will develop appropriate outreach training to include personal greetings; phone calls; use of ConnectEd; home visitations; developing teacher-parent outreach focus groups, etc. All trainings will be bi-directional; interactive; and build relationships between the school and parents. Every school will identify a dedicated and appropriate space for the presentation of parent and teacher training. The District will monitor these locations and provide clear guidance for set-aside spaces. Every school will annually identify the staff responsible for parent engagement/community partnerships and parent trainings. The District will monitor this The District will develop best practice videos for curricula delivery Implement a central and local district training cadre to visit atrisk schools and provide intensive support Each school will complete semester qualitative and quantitative assessments and write improvement strategies within the Single Plan for Student Achievement. The District will develop Parent Leadership training and implement a certification program for parent trainers interested in mentoring other parents. Develop and implement bilingual online video trainings for all Toolkit curricula

El Distrito desarrollará currículos de Participación de los Padres para el Éxito de los Estudiantes incluyendo comprensión de datos, estrategias de acceso universal, y apoyo con la tarea. El Distrito aplicará medidas para el Medio Ambiente Acogedor en todas las escuelas. Elaborar un documento de planificación de talleres y planes de lecciones de muestra para proporcionar una modelo de presentación consistente de los programas de formación.
