2 PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE Dear parishioners: When the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would conceive and bear the Savior, he also announced that her cousin Elizabeth had already been pregnant for six months. When the angel departed, Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste (Luke 1:39) to be with her cousin until John the Baptist was born. I couldn t stop thinking about this while we were celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe last Monday. Just as she did in Judah, Mary traveled to the hill country of Tepeyac near modern-day Mexico City in 1531 to be with her people. But she didn t stop there. The image she left on the tilma of St. Juan Diego continues to convey her message of love to us today. Scientists who have studied the image told us that the dimensions of Our Lady s body in the image were that of an expectant mother due quite soon. Indeed, December 12, the day Our Lady imprinted her image on Juan Diego s tilma, is less than two weeks away from Christmas. How can we not acclaim like Elizabeth did in the Gospel: And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? (Luke 1:43) A number of studies have also been conducted on the eyes of Our Lady in the image. The bearded Juan Diego is clearly present in cornea of both eyes with the exact location and proportions as it would appear in a living human eye. Apparently, Our Lady was looking directly at Juan Diego when she took her best selfie 300 years before photography was even invented! Some people think that Our Lady of Guadalupe is only for Mexicans or the 9 million Aztecs who converted within seven years after her apparition. They need to take a good look into her eyes. I can t think of a better Christmas message than the words Our Lady spoke to Juan Diego: My little one, do not let your heart be disturbed. Let nothing scares or distresses you. Am I not here, who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not the fountain of your joy? Are you not in the fold of my mantle, in the cradle of my arms? What more do you need? Fr. Vincentius Do, Pastor RECONCILIATION MONDAY December 19th is called Reconciliation Monday in our Diocese. On this special day, there will be priests hearing confessions in all the parishes of our diocese. All our parish priests will be hearing confessions in the Upper Church from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM that day. Please take this opportunity to spiritually prepare for the great solemnity of Christmas. The Rectory will be closed this Saturday-Monday, December 24-26, to celebrate Christmas. CHRISTMAS MASS SCHEDULE Like previous years, on Christmas Eve, Saturday, December 24, we will have a 5:00 PM Bilingual Family Mass (English and Spanish), and at 10:00 PM, we will have our trilingual Holy Night Mass (English, Spanish and Chinese). On Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25, our Masses will follow our regular Sunday schedule. Please make every effort to attend at least one of our Masses this Christmas. HOLY FAMILY CELEBRATION During the 10:30 AM Mass on Christmas Sunday, December 25, we will celebrate the traditional Nativity Mass in honor of the Holy Family. All parishioners are invited. We ask that parents dress their children up as shepherds and angels or in any traditional vestments of their respective countries. There will be refreshments in the Lower Church after Mass. CATHOLIC CHARITIES Bishop DiMarzio invites all to join him in this year s Catholic Charities Christmas Collection which will take place at all Christmas Masses. Please return the special Catholic Charities envelope with your generous gift to share God s love with families and children in need. FEAST OF THE MAGI To celebrate the Feast of the Magi, we will continue the tradition of giving presents to parishioners children, from infants to age 10, after the 10:30 AM Mass in the school auditorium (Kelly Hall) on January 8, Any parishioner who wishes to donate presents, please wrap them up nicely and indicate whether they are for a boy or a girl, for an infant or for a certain age. Presents can be dropped off at the rectory before December 31. 3 LA PERSPECTIVA DEL PÁRROCO Queridos feligreses: Cuando el ángel Gabriel le anunció a María que concebiría y llevaría al Salvador, también anunció que su prima Isabel había estado embarazada durante seis meses. Cuando el ángel se fue, María salió y viajó a la colina apresuradamente (Lucas 1:39) para estar con su prima hasta que nació Juan el Bautista. No podía dejar de pensar en esto mientras celebramos a la Virgen de Guadalupe el lunes pasado. Así como lo hizo en Judá, María viajó a la región montañosa de Tepeyac, cerca de la ciudad moderna de México, en 1531, para estar con su pueblo. Pero ella no se detuvo allí. La imagen que dejó en la tilma de San Juan Diego sigue transmitiendo su mensaje de amor a nosotros hoy. Los científicos que han estudiado la imagen nos dijeron que las dimensiones del cuerpo de la Virgen en la imagen eran las de una madre embarazada debido muy pronto. De hecho, el 12 de diciembre, el día en que la Virgen imprimió su imagen en la tilma de Juan Diego, está a menos de dos semanas de Navidad. Cómo no podemos aclamar como Isabel en el Evangelio: Y cómo me sucede esto, que la Madre de mi Señor venga a mí? (Lucas 1:43) También se han realizado varios estudios sobre los ojos de la Virgen en la imagen. El Juan Diego barbudo está claramente presente en la córnea de ambos ojos con la ubicación y las proporciones exacta como se vería en un ojo humano vivo. Aparentemente, Nuestra Señora miraba directamente a Juan Diego cuando tomó su mejor selfie 300 años antes de que se inventara la fotografía! Algunas personas piensan que la Virgen de Guadalupe es sólo para los mexicanos o los 9 millones de aztecas que se convirtieron dentro de siete años después de su aparición. Tienen que echarle un buen vistazo a los ojos. No puedo pensar en un mejor mensaje navideño que en las palabras que Nuestra Señora habló a Juan Diego: Mi pequeño hijo, no se turbe tu corazón, que no es nada lo que te asusta y te aflige. No estoy aquí yo, que soy tu Madre? No estás bajo mi sombra y resguardo? No soy yo la fuente de tu alegría? No estás en el hueco de mi manto, en donde se cruzan mis brazos? Necesitas algo más? En este día especial, habrá sacerdotes que escucharán confesiones en todas las parroquias de nuestra diócesis. CELEBRACIÓN DE LA SAGRADA FAMILIA El domingo de la Natividad, 25 de diciembre, en la Misa de las 10:30 AM se celebrara la tradicional Misa Navideña en honor a la Sagrada Familia, invitamos cordialmente a toda la comunidad a participar. Les pedimos a los padres de familia disfrazar a sus hijos/as de pastores, ángeles, cholitos/as, y toda vestimenta tradicional de sus respectivos países. Después de la Misa habrá refrigerio en la Iglesia de abajo. FIESTA DE LOS REYES MAGOS Para celebrar la Fiesta de los Reyes Magos, continuaremos la tradición de donar regalos a nuestros niños desde infantes hasta los 10 años después de la Misa del 8 de enero 2017 en el auditorio de la escuela (Kelly Hall). Si puedan traer un regalo, por favor pedimos lo envuelvan y pongan una nota si es para niño/niña infante y la edad apropiada y tráiganlo a la rectoría en o antes del 31 de diciembre. Gracias.
