4 PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE Dear Agathians: Li le Johnny s mother looked out the window and no ced him playing church with their cat. He had the cat si ng quietly as he preached to it. The mother smiled and went about her work. A while later she heard loud meowing and hissing and ran back to the window. To her horror, li le Johnny was bap zing the cat in a tub of water. She called out, Johnny, stop that! The cat is afraid of water! Johnny looked up and said, Well, he should have thought of that before he joined my church. Men on the name of John the Bap st and immediately the image of a bearded man in ragged clothes bap zing in the river comes to mind. Almost everybody, believer and non believer alike, has heard of John the Bap st. Li le children learn of him very quickly. A er Jesus, John the Bap st is probably the most significant and well known figure in the Gospels. Like Jesus, John entered the world with angelic proclama on and divine interven on, as St. Luke me culously recorded in his Gospel. In fact, John s birth was so special that the Church makes a solemnity out of it, even celebra ng it in place of a Sunday liturgy. All other saints are celebrated on the day of their death or the founding of their religious order. The only other birthdays we celebrate in the Catholic Church are that of Jesus and Mary. Like Jesus and Mary, John the Bap st was born without original sin. Jesus, of course, is the sinless one (2 Corinthians 5:21). Mary was saved from original sin at the moment of her concep on. And John was cleansed when his 6 month pregnant mother Elizabeth was greeted by the Mother of the Lord (Luke 1:39 45). Beside being chronologically 6 months before the birth of Christ, John s birthday is celebrated on June 24 for another important reason. As Christmas was meant to replace the Roman celebra on of the winter sols ce, the birth of John the Bap st was designed to be celebrated instead of the summer sols ce. In the northern hemisphere, daylight gradually decreases from the summer sols ce un l the winter sols ce when it begins to increase again. Thus, John the Bap st s birth reminds us of his famous saying, He must increase; I must decrease (John 3:30). As we celebrate the birth of John the Bap st this weekend, may we also decrease ourselves in order to prepare the way for the Lord to be born into our hearts and homes, not just at Christmas but at every moment of our life. Vincen us Do, Pastor ALTAR SERVERS NEEDED The ministry of Altar Servers is among the earliest of all liturgical roles, second only to the ministries of priests and deacons in terms of history and closeness to the altar. Altar serving is a privileged ministry, not only to assist the priests at the altar and help the parishioners celebrate Mass more prayerfully, but most of all to give glory to God. We are now recrui ng more Altar Servers for our parish. Any boy or girl who has received first Holy Communion is eligible. Please contact Dulce in the rectory for a registra on form. COMMUNION GESTURES As Catholics, we believe that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharis c. That s why we show our utmost respect and reverence when we come forward for Holy Communion. As the priest, deacon, or lay minister says The Body of Christ or The Blood of Christ, please respond Amen audibly to affirm your belief that what you receive is really the Body and Blood of Christ. When receiving in the hand, please place one hand on top of the other to create a throne for Christ. A er the priest, deacon, or lay minister place the Eucharist in your hand, please put it in your mouth and consume it immediately. It is not lawful to carry the Eucharist to the pew. When receiving on the tongue, please open your mouth a er responding Amen and please don t hold out your hands. We invite everyone in church to come forward at Communion me. If you are not ready or not able to receive Communion, please go on the priest s line with your arms crossed across your chest. Seeing your crossed arms, the priest will give you a blessing. 5 PERSPECTIVA del PÁRROCO Queridos Agatinos: La madre del pequeño Juanito miraba por la ventana y notó que jugaba a la iglesia con su gato. Tenía al gato sentado tranquilamente mientras le predicaba. La madre sonrió y siguió con su trabajo. Un rato después, oyó un fuerte maullido y siseo, y corrió hacia la ventana.
