3 PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE Legend has it that when Saint Patrick was an old man, a er more than twenty years of working to convert the people of Ireland, he had a dream. In his dream, he saw himself silently following Jesus in a field. The Lord led St. Patrick up a high mountain and pointed into the dark valley below. Look! he said. St. Patrick looked down and saw many flames burning in the shadow of the night, ligh ng up the countryside. The sight warmed St. Patrick s heart. He knew that the flames symbolized the Chris an faith he had planted, which by this me had grown and spread all across the island na on. He looked at Jesus and smiled. But Jesus wasn t smiling. He pointed back down the valley and said again, Look! St. Patrick looked again. To his horror, the flames were dying out one by one as he watched. In the darkness, the old and weary bishop looked back at Jesus with tears in his eyes. Oh, please tell me, Lord, that Ireland will never lose the faith! As he broke down and cried, St. Patrick felt a strong arm li ing him up and a gentle hand poin ng his face down again to the valley below. There upon the meadow, in the darkness of the night, was a single flame burning. Suddenly, another flame appeared that seemed to draw itself out of the first flame; then another from that one, and another and another, un l the lights once again spread all across the countryside, even brighter than before. Dear Agathians: On Saturday, March 17, the Church will once again celebrate St. Patrick. To many New Yorkers, St. Patrick s Day is o en associated with parades, beers, and controversies. For Catholics, however, the celebra on of St. Patrick must be more than just wearing green, drawing shamrock, and hi ng the bar. At the very least, we should learn from St. Patrick s example of humility, faithfulness, perseverance, and courage. Just as St. Patrick prayed for Ireland, I pray that the light of faith con nues to warm hearts and homes throughout our parish. Fr. For details, please call OUTDOOR STATIONS OF THE CROSS All are invited to join the parishes of St. Agatha, St. Michael and Our Lady of Perpetual Help in a prayerful procession of the Sta ons of the Cross on Friday, March 23, star ng at 7:00 PM in the Lower Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (5th Avenue & 59th Street), walking along 5th Avenue, and ending at Sunset Park (44th Street entrance, between 5th & 6th Avenues). 4 All married couples are invited to a one day marriage enrichment program called Celebrate Marriage Day at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Forest Hills, NY on Saturday, March 24, from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. The day offers some me to look at where we are in our marriage, revisit our basic communica on skills, and share memories of our life together as a married couple. It also helps us focus on the importance and dignity of our Sacrament of Marriage in God s plan for us. The cost of $25 per couple includes breakfast, lunch, and materials. This modern day Sta ons of the Cross is the largest public Chris an peace witness in New York City. The theme this year is looking through the eyes of Jesus. At each Sta on, we will reflect on our par cipa on in a world s ll characterized by crucifixion. The walk begins at 8:30 AM on March 30th at 47th Street between First and Second Avenues and proceeds along 42nd Street, ending on 42nd Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues around noon. PERSPECTIVA del PÁRROCO La leyenda cuanta que cuando San Patricio era un anciano, después de más de veinte años de trabajo para convertir a la gente de Irlanda, tuvo un sueño.
