2 PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE Dear Parishioners: Saint Augustine of Hippo is one of the greatest theologians of the Church. He is called the Doctor of Grace, but he is also called the Son of Tears because of the tears his mother, St. Monica, shed for years over his immoral life. Saint Monica was born in 322 in Tagaste, which is presentday Algeria. Her parents were Christians, but they married her off at a very young age to a Roman pagan official named Patricius. Like his mother, Patricius had a violent temper. He was also adulterous and immoral. He and his mother caused Monica many pain. Although Patricius respected Monica s beliefs, her prayers and Christian practices bothered him. He refused to let her baptize their children. For years, Monica prayed for her husband and mother-in-law. Patricius eventually was baptized on his deathbed. Of her three children, Augustine caused Monica the most heartache. Although he was very bright, Augustine was lazy and uncivil, spending most of his time in youthful carousing. After the death of Patricius, Monica sent the 17-year-old Augustine to Carthage for schooling. While in Carthage, Augustine fell under the influence of the heretical Manichean sect. He also lived with a young woman and had a son out of wedlock. This caused Monica great anguish, but she did not lose faith. She continually fasted, prayed, and wept on his behalf. She even asked the local bishop for help. The bishop counseled her to be patient, saying, Go on your way, and may God bless you, for it is not possible that the son of so many tears should be lost. Augustine then tricked his mother and went to Rome with his mistress and son. Monica followed him there, then to Milan. It was in Milan, with the help of the local bishop, St. Ambrose, that Augustine finally gave up his wayward life and was baptized at the age of 32. Six months later, Monica died on their way back to Africa. Augustine went on to become a priest, then a bishop, and eventually one of the great four doctors of the Latin Church. I believe there is no more suitable story for Mother s Day than the story of St. Monica and St. Augustine. There is a message here for everyone. May we all learn these lessons of patience, perseverance, faithfulness, hope and love, so that the many Monicas out there may soon stop their flow of tears caused by their wayward Augustines. Fr. Vincentius Do, Pastor APPRECIATION A parish s growth depends largely on how involved its parishioners are. We are very blessed to have very active and generous parishioners. For example, during the Easter weekend, our Children Choir and Youth Group did a bake sale and raised $867 for the Annual Catholic Appeal. During the last few weeks, Mr. Victor Rodriguez made our church even more beautiful by planting flowers all around our premises. And last Saturday, our Charity Committee and Charismatic Music Ministry Cristo Te Ama, under the capable leadership of Carmin Cruz, once again organized a delicious and delightful Parochial Dinner. We express our heartfelt thanks to all our generous parishioners and we ask everyone to continue keeping our parish as the jewel of Sunset Park. CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Gabriel Samolyuk, an alumnus of St. Agatha School and one of our Altar Servers, who received the Director s Award for Music at Xaverian High School on May 13. Keep up the good work, Gabriel! HONORING OUR MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY The Committees of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Altagracia, and Our Lady of the Cloud cordially invite all parishioners to celebrate the Month of Mary, the Month of Mothers, with a novena at 6:00 PM everyday from May 12 to May 19 in the Upper Church, a Solemn Procession at 4:00 PM on May 20 with all three images of Our Lady on the streets, followed by a Solemn Mass in the Upper Church and a Grand Concert in the Lower Church. A breakfast and a Resource Fair for Special Needs will follow immediately after Mass. Arrangements will be in place for those with physical, mental or emotional needs. Families, companions and friends are most welcome. The Lower Church, reception site, and the toilets are all accessible. American Sign Language and screen captioning will be offered. CATECHISTS NEEDED Every year our Faith Formation Program relies on volunteers to pass on the faith to our children. But every catechetical leader knows how difficult it is to recruit volunteers to be catechists. Are you reluctant to answer the call to be a catechist because you re not sure if you re qualified or capable? None of our catechists has an advance degree in teaching religion. Are you worried that your faith is not strong or deep enough? New catechists often marvel at how their teaching has strengthened their own faith. Perhaps you are intimidated by the time commitment required of catechists? Fear not, we work as a team with plenty of resources and help along the way. So, if you are a practicing Catholic at least 18 years old, we ask that you prayerfully consider whether God is calling you to be a catechist. Then, please give Gizeth Vecchio, our Faith Formation Director, a call at the rectory. Thank you!

3 LA PERSPECTIVA DEL PÁRROCO Queridos feligreses: San Agustín de Hipona es uno de los más grandes teólogos de la Iglesia. Se le llama el Doctor de la Gracia, pero también es llamado el Hijo de las Lágrimas por las lágrimas que su madre, Santa Mónica, derramó durante años sobre su vida inmoral. Santa Mónica nació en el año 322 en Tagaste, que hoy es Argelia. Sus padres eran cristianos, pero la casaron a una edad muy temprana a un funcionario pagano romano llamado Patricio.
