2 PASTOR S PERSPECTIVE Dear parishioners: According to some traditions, before giving birth to Saint Dominic, his mother Blessed Juana of Aza made a pilgrimage to the Benedictine Abbey of Silos. There she had a strange dream of a dog leaping from her womb carrying a torch in its mouth and seeming to set the earth on fire. Troubled by the dream, Juana sought advice from one of the monks. He told her, Do not worry, lady. The burning touch represents the Word of God. Your son will go through the whole world announcing it. So it was. Dominic was ordained a priest at the age of 24. When he was about 33 years old, he came in contact with the Albigensian heresy in a southern region of France. This heresy teaches that matter is evil and only spirit is good, in direct opposition to the Catholic teaching of the Incarnation. On fire with a reforming zeal, Dominic began to travel from village to village teaching the truths of the faith, despite the jeers, insults, and tortures from the Albigensians. His followers came to be known as Dominicans, or Dominicanus in Latin, which sounds very much like Domini canes Dogs of the Lord. It was also for the conversion of the Albigensians that Our Blessed Mother revealed the Rosary to Saint Dominic. After much preaching with little success, Dominic complained in prayer to Our Blessed Mother. She appeared to him in a church and taught him how to pray the Rosary. He immediately went into the villages of the heretics, gathered the people, and taught them to pray the mysteries of the Rosary, as Our Blessed Mother instructed him. As we begin this October, the Month of the Rosary, our world is still beset by heretic teachings and immoral lifestyles. Let s pick up our rosaries and, like true Dogs of the Lord, set the whole world on fire! Fr. Vincentius Do, Pastor DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE All are invited to join Bishop DiMarzio and the Diocese of Brooklyn on a Marian Pilgrimage to the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC on Saturday, October 29. Our parish s bus will leave around 6:00 AM and will return by 10:00 PM on the same day. The bus fare is $50 per person. Please bring your own lunch. Space is limited, please call the rectory to register now. MONTH OF THE ROSARY October is the Month of the Rosary. Father Ortiz and Deacon Emilio are organizing groups to go and pray the Rosary in people s homes. Please contact either one of them for more details. FONTBONNE HALL ACADEMY Fontbonne Hall Academy, located at 9901 Shore Rd, Brooklyn, invites 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls and their families to an Open House on Saturday, October 22, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. GUADALUPE RUN The Diocesan Mexican Apostolate is again organizing a run to the Co- Cathedral of St. Joseph on December 12 in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Anyone 13 years or older can participate. The cost is $45 per person which includes the uniform. The run will conclude with Mass at the co-cathedral. At the end of the Mass, the Bishop will bless the torches that each parish group will carry back to their parish. 3 LA PERSPECTIVA DEL PÁRROCO Queridos feligreses: Según algunas tradiciones, antes de dar a luz a Santo Domingo, su madre la Beata Juana de Aza hizo una peregrinación a la Abadía Benedictina de Silos. Allí tuvo un extraño sueño de un perro brincando de su vientre que llevaba una antorcha en su boca y que parecía encender la tierra en fuego. Preocupada por el sueño, Juana buscó el consejo de uno de los monjes. Él le dijo: No se preocupe, señora. El antorcha encendida representa la Palabra de Dios. Su hijo va a pasar por todo el mundo anunciando la palabra. Y así fue. Domingo fue ordenado sacerdote a la edad de 24. Cuando estaba a punto de cumplir 33 años, se puso en contacto con la herejía albigense en una región del sur de Francia. Esta herejía enseña que la sustancia es el mal y sólo el espíritu es bueno, en directa oposición a la doctrina católica de la Encarnación. En llamas con un celo reformador, Domingo comenzó a viajar de pueblo en pueblo enseñado las verdades de la fe, a pesar de las burlas, insultos y torturas de los albigenses. Sus seguidores llegaron a ser conocidos como dominicos, o dominicanus en latín, que se parece mucho a Domini canes los perros del Señor. Fue también por la conversión de los albigenses que Nuestra Santa Madre reveló el Rosario a Santo Domingo. Después de mucha predicación con poco éxito, Domingo se quejó en la oración a Nuestra Santísima Madre. Ella se le apareció en una iglesia y le reveló el Rosario.
