Ask questions such as: Cómo vas a la escuela? Cómo van a la escuela otros niños? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Point out the repetition of the words Voy a la escuela in each sentence. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that in this book, children will see many ways to ride to school. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. Cómo va a la escuela este niño? El niño dice: Voy a la escuela en autobús. Digan en. Con qué letra empieza esta palabra? Busquen y señalen la palabra en, y díganla en voz alta. Page 3: Remind children that they can use information in the pictures to help them read. Vayan a la página 3. Miren la foto. 3 Read Now have children read softly while pointing under each word. Observe children as they read. Respond to the Text Personal Response Invite children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting. Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text Children can ride to school on the bus, on a bike, in a car, on a scooter, or in a wagon. There are many ways to ride to school. Adults have to help most children get to school. Some ways to go to school use people power and some use vehicles. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Practice early reading behaviors such as reading from left to right and understanding the concept of a sentence as a group of words with ending punctuation. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Materials: pairs of words. Have children listen for words that rhyme. Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme, and keep their hands in their laps if the words do not rhyme. Say pairs of words, for example, bici and camión, carro and autobús, carrito and chiquito, escuela and ciruela, lleva and voy, mamá and papá. Matching Letters Materials: upper and lower case magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Have children choose letters and match them with their upper or lower case form. Finding Letters Have children recognize letters by name and locate them quickly in words. Use letters from the words in the story, including: escuela, autobús, bici, patín, carrito. 3 Lesson 29:

4 Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 29.6 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension Skill Main Idea and Details Tell children that most books have a main idea. The main idea is what the book is mostly about. Details tell more about the main idea. Model how to identify the main idea: Think Aloud Cuál es la idea principal del libro? Practice the Skill Have children think of another book they have read. Guide them in identifying the main idea. Writing Prompt Read aloud the following prompt.
