2 Acampar bajo las estrellas by Nic Grant Build Background Help children use their knowledge of objects in the sky. Build interest by asking questions such as the following: Qué ven cuando miran al cielo? Qué palabras los ayudan a hablar sobre lo que ven? Read the title and author and talk about the cover illustration. Explain that the family is camping. They are in their sleeping bags, looking at the sky before they go to sleep in their tent. Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, helping with unfamiliar words so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: In this book the people in a family are telling what they can see in the sky when they camp. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. Miren la ilustración. Qué se ve en el cielo? Sí, se ve el sol. Qué dice en el libro? Dice: Ese es el sol. Mira cómo es. Digan la palabra cómo. Con qué letra creen que empieza la palabra cómo? Ahora vuelvan al comienzo y lean sobre lo que se puede ver en el cielo cuando uno va a acampar. Words to Know Have children turn to the Palabras que quiero saber at the back of the book. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Practice early reading behaviors such as reading from left to right, and pointing under each word. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Have children listen for words that begin with the same sound. Have children raise their hands if the words begin with the same sound and keep their hands in their laps if the beginning sound is different. Say pairs of words, such as: sol and son; luna and mira; estrella and ese; cómo and más; tienda and tiempo; etc. Build Words Build a few easy high-frequency words, using letter blocks or magnet letters. Help children build the high-frequency words el, la, una, cómo, and son. Finding Letters Have children recognize letters by name and locate them quickly in words. Use letters from the words in the book, including: ese, esa, es, sol, luna, estrella. 3 Lesson 16: Acampar bajo las estrellas

4 Writing About Reading Vocabulary Practice Read the directions and have children complete the Vocabulario questions on Hoja reproducible Responding Have children complete the vocabulary activities on page 7. Building Vocabulary Things in the Sky Build on the words for things in the sky in Acampar bajo las estrellas. Suggested language: Pensemos en todas las cosas que podemos ver en el cielo. Qué otras cosas podemos ver en el cielo? Pueden ver nubes en el cielo? As children suggest objects in the sky, write their words and sentences on the board or on a large strip of paper. Begin the list with the words: Ese es and Esa es. (Possible suggestions: un copo de nieve, la lluvia, el granizo, la aguanieve, un tornado, una nube de tierra, un avión, un helicóptero, un g aerostático, una gaviota, un planeta) After children have made their suggestions, read the list aloud together, pointing to each word.
