2 La magia del trabajo en equipo by L. M. Colozza Build Background Help students use their knowledge of families and chores to visualize the story. Build interest by asking questions such as the following: En qué clase de equipos han participado? En qué se parece la familia a un equipo? Read the title and author and talk about the cover illustration. Tell students that this story is fantasy, so some of the events could not really happen, even though they seem real. Introduce the Text Guide students through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Pages 2 3: Explain that this is a story about a boy named Damián and his family. Damián is in fourth grade; he has an older sister named Carolina and a younger brother named Mauro. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2 del libro. Es el primer día de clase. 3 Read Have students read silently while you listen to individual students read aloud. Support their understanding of the text as needed. Remind students to use the Summarize Strategy explain important parts of the story in their own words as they read. and to pause to Discuss and Revisit the Text Personal Response Invite students to share their personal responses to the story. Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, help students understand these points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text When Damián s mom goes back to work, things stop running smoothly in the family. At a family meeting, Damián s Dad makes a chart listing all the jobs that need to be done. A magic dog joins the family and helps them do what s on the chart. Working together can help solve problems. Making a plan is just the first step following the plan is the next step. What seems like magic might just be teamwork Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. The author includes captions for every illustration that clarify and reinforce the events in the story. Choices for Further Support Fluency Invite students to choose a passage from the text to act out. Remind them to pay attention to punctuation, and to read as if the narrator, Damián or the other characters, were actually speaking. Comprehension Based on your observations of the students reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind students to go back to the text to support their ideas. Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words with diphthongs. Explain to students that a diphthong is formed when there are two vowels in the same syllable. Write examples from the text on the board, such as nuevo (page 4), escuela, aceitada (page 5), reunión (page 8). Ask students to fi nd more examples of diphthongs in the selection. 3

4 Writing about Reading Critical Thinking Have students complete the questions on Hoja reproducible Responding Have students complete the activities at the back of the book, using their Cuaderno del lector. Use the instruction below as needed to reinforce or extend understanding of the comprehension skill. Target Comprehension Skill Theme Remind students that understanding characters actions will help them recognize the theme of a story.
