2 by Olivia Rose Build Background Read the title to children and ask them what they see in the cover photo. Help children use their knowledge of friendship to think about the book. Build interest with questions such as this: Qué les gusta hacer con sus amigos? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, helping with unfamiliar words so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that this book tells about things friends like to do together. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2 del libro. Qué ven en la foto? Estos dos amigos están leyendo un libro. Entonces, dicen: A nosotros nos gusta leer. A ustedes les gusta leer? Leen con sus amigos? 3 Read Now have children read softly while pointing under each word. Observe children as they read. Respond to the Text Personal Response Ask children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found most interesting. Suggested language: Les gusta hacer estas cosas con sus amigos? Qué más les gusta hacer? Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text Friends like to read, play, build, bake, and paint together. Friends like to do many things together. Shared activities help to bond friends. The writer uses the same sentence pattern on every page: A nosotros/nosotras nos gusta. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Practice early reading behaviors, such as reading from left to right and matching one spoken to one written word while reading. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Have children listen for words that begin with the same sound. Have children raise their hands if the words begin with the same sound and keep their hands in their laps if the beginning letter is different. Say pairs of words, emphasizing the beginning consonant sound: leer and escribir; jugar and ganar; construir and correr; gusta and galletas; hacer and nosotros; etc. Rhyming Game Have children listen for words that rhyme. Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme and keep their hands on their laps if the words do not rhyme. Say pairs of words, including: leer and correr; pintar and cantar; jugar and saltar; cubo and masa; hacer and comer; galleta and pintura. ABC Order Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Have children choose letters and put them in ABC order. 3 Lesson 21:

4 Writing About Reading Vocabulary Practice Read the directions and have children complete the Vocabulario questions on Hoja reproducible Responding Have children complete the vocabulary activities on page 7. Building Vocabulary Doing Things with Friends Build on the action words in. Suggested language: Pensemos en todo lo que nos gusta hacer con nuestros amigos. Qué les gusta hacer a ustedes con sus amigos? Les gusta jugar en el columpio o saltar la cuerda? As children suggest different things they do, write their words on the board or on a large strip of paper. Begin the list with: A nosotros nos gusta. (Possible suggestions: correr, cantar, reír, nadar, trepar, columpiarnos, patinar, montar en bicicleta, etc.) After children have made their suggestions, read the list aloud together, pointing to each word.
