Make sure that children know what a diver is. Anticipate the text with questions like these: Qué otros seres vivos podría ver un buzo en el mar? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so that they can read the text successfully. Point out the repeated sentence pattern, El buzo nada y mira. Ella ve. Preview the photos to identify the animals. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Tell children that this book gives information about different animals a diver sees under the sea. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. 3 Read As children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem solving ability. Respond to the Text Personal Response Invite children to share their personal responses to the story. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting. It would be exciting to see underwater animals up close. The photos were taken by underwater cameras. The writer uses the same sentence on more than one page. Invite children to read a one-line and two-line sentence. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Rhyme Have children fi nd the words nadar and mar on page 5 of. Explain that the words nadar and mar rhyme because their endings sounds are the same. Say these words, and ask children to raise their hands when they hear any word that rhymes with nadar and mar: baya, saltar, casa, mirar, tomar, paso. Words with multiple meanings Point out the word nada on page 4. Explain that the word nada can have more than one meaning. Ask children to think about two possible meanings of nada. Have them use each word in spoken sentences to show the different meanings. 3

4 Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 11.5 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension Skill Author s Purpose Tell children an author writes a book for a reason, and readers can think about what the author wanted to do by finding details in the book.
