2 by Daniel Morgan Build Background Read the title to children and have them describe what they see in the cover photo. Have them explain how they can tell that the photo was taken at night. Build interest with questions such as: Qué más pueden ver en el cielo de noche? Qué pueden ver en el cielo de día? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, helping with unfamiliar words so that they can read the text successfully. Point out the repeated sentence pattern: Ahora, mira. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that on every page of this book, children will learn about something that is in the sky. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. Recuerden usar la información de las fotos como ayuda para leer. Esta foto es la misma que vimos en la portada. La primera oración dice: Mira la luna. Read each word aloud and then together. Explain any unknown words. Tell children to look for these words as they read. 3 Read Now have children read softly while pointing under each word. Observe children as they read. Respond to the Text Personal Response Ask children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting. Suggested language: Qué les gusta ver en el cielo? Por qué les gusta ver eso? Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text People can see the moon, stars, sun, clouds, and a rainbow if they look at the sky. The night sky is different from the day sky. A rainbow comes after the rain. If we look carefully, we can see many different things in the sky. The writer wants to show how interesting it is to look up at the sky. Each photo is inside a yellow oval that looks like a window, camera, or telescope. The writer uses some of the same words on each page Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, Heinemann, Portsmouth, N.H. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Give children practice with the features of a sentence. Have them find the first word in a sentence and name its uppercase letter and point to the period at the end of a sentence. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Have children listen for words that rhyme with luna. Say luna and another word. Have children raise their hands if the two words rhyme and keep their hands in their laps if the ending sounds are different. Example words: cuna, nube, una, sol, aceituna, alguna, estrella, cielo, duna. Segment Words Have children listen for the fi rst sound as you say a word. Ask them to say the word without the fi rst sound. Words to say: mira, luna, ahora, sol, noche, día. Build Sentences Materials: cards or paper slips with the words Ahora, mira, la, el, luna, sol, arco iris. 4 Writing About Reading Vocabulary Practice Read the directions and have children complete the Vocabulario questions on Hoja reproducible Responding Have children complete the vocabulary activities on page 7. Building Vocabulary Weather Words Build on the photos of the sun and clouds in to talk about weather. Suggested language: A veces miramos afuera para ver el sol que brilla. Otras veces, vemos nubes grises en el cielo. Qué más podemos mirar para decir cómo está el tiempo? As children make suggestions, write their words on the board or chart paper. Begin the list with the word: Mira. (Possible suggestions: la lluvia, el viento, la luz del sol, el cielo azul, la nieve, el hielo, la tormenta, la niebla, los charcos) Read the completed list aloud with children, pointing to each word.
