He walked in, saw the teacher and threw some balls to nearby children. He looked at a book and ate a fun snack. What a fun outing for the curious monkey! 2 Jorge el Curioso va a la escuela Build Background Read the title to the children and talk with them about the character of Jorge el Curioso. Invite them to tell what they know about this beloved fictional animal. Ask them what they think they will learn about school from this book. Encourage children to use their knowledge of school to think about the book. Ask a question such as: Qué les gusta hacer en la escuela? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Here are some suggestions: Pages 2: Explain that in this story a monkey named Jorge el Curioso wants to fi nd out about school. Because this is a fantasy, Jorge el Curioso can do things that people can do, like sleep in a bed or walk into school with his lunch box. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. Respond to the Text Personal Response Invite children to share their personal responses to the story. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found most interesting. Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, Heinemann, Portsmouth, N.H. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Have children match one spoken word to one written word while reading the story. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Matching Letters Materials: upper and lower case magnetic or cardboard letter or letter cards. Have children choose letters and match them with their upper or lower case forms. Clapping Syllables Have children say and clap syllables in two- and three-syllable words from pictures in the story. Say each word and have them repeat after you, with claps. Use words from the pictures, for example: Jorge, día, comedor, prisa, escuela, maestro, muchos. 3

4 Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 3.5 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension ension Skill Sequence of Events Tell children that the sequence of events is the order in which things happen in a story.
