Dónde estaba? Qué hacía? Read the title and talk about the cover photograph. Tell children that this book will give information about a lion that lives in nature. Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, helping with unfamiliar words so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that children will read about different things the lion can do. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. Qué está haciendo el león? El autor dice: puede comer. Dónde está el león? Cómo saben que el león de este libro es real? Este león vive en su ambiente natural. Page 3: Vayan a la página 3. Words to Know Have children turn to the Palabras que quiero saber at the back of the book. Read each word aloud and then together. Explain any unknown words. 3 Read Now have children read softly while pointing under each word. Observe children as they read. Respond to the Text Personal Response Ask children to share their personal responses to the book. Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text A lion can eat, drink, run, play, and sleep. Lions need to do many things to live in the wild. Lions are very beautiful, strong animals. The photos show what a lion can do. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Help children point to the first word in each sentence and then point to the last word in each sentence. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Have children listen for words that begin with the same sound. Have children raise their hands if the words begin with the same sound and keep their hands in their laps if the beginning sound is different. Say pairs of words, emphasizing the beginning consonant sound, for example: león and puede; león and leer; correr and comer; correr and jugar; dormir and dibujar; dormir and beber. Tracing Letters Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Have children choose a letter, say the name, and trace the letter. Build Words Have children say words that describe actions (comer, beber, correr, jugar, dormir, leer, dibujar, saltar, etc.). Write the words in a list on the board or on a large sheet of paper. Read the list aloud together. 3 Lesson 24:

4 Writing About Reading Vocabulary Practice Read the directions and have children complete the Vocabulario questions on Hoja reproducible Responding Have children complete the vocabulary activities on page 7. Building Vocabulary Action Words Build on the action words in. Suggested language: Pensemos en todo lo que puede hacer el león. Qué más creen que puede hacer el león? As children suggest actions, write their words and sentences on the board or on a large strip of paper. Begin the list with the words: puede. (Possible suggestions: cazar, caminar, bostezar, rasguñar, rugir, trepar ) After children have made their suggestions, read the list aloud together, pointing to each word. Miren todo lo que puede hacer un león! Writing Prompt Read aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6.
