2 by Erika Rice Build Background Encourage children to talk about their friends who they are, how they met, what they do. Then read the book title and talk about what these friends are doing in the cover photos. Prompt predictions by asking: Qué creen que pueden aprender sobre los amigos en este libro? Tell children that this book is informational text, so the words and photos will give facts about the topic. Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that this book tells about different kinds of friends and what they do together. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. 3 Read As children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem solving ability. Respond to the Text Personal Response Ask children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting. Suggested language: Qué cosas que están en el libro les gusta hacer con sus amigos? Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text Friends can do things together, such as playing, laughing, fixing problems, and learning things. You can make friends by talking or sharing. Friends have things that are the same and things that are different. Friends can live nearby or faraway. There are many different kinds of friends. Friends can have fun together. The author makes the writing friendly by talking to the reader, using second person forms. The section headings tell the reader what the next part of the book will be about. The photos show the things friends can do together Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, Heinemann, Portsmouth, N.H. Choices for Support Fluency Have partners choose a page to read out loud that tells about two friends. Have them act out the text. Remind children to pay attention to action words when they read so they know what to act out. Phonics and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables in words from the book: problema, verano, invierno, juntos, valiente. Have them clap on each syllable: pro-blema, ve-ra-no, in-vier-no, va-lien-te. How Many Words? Read a sentence from the book, without showing the text: Los amigos pueden hacer cosas juntos. Have children say the sentence with you slowly and hold up one fi nger for each word they hear. Ask: Cuántas palabras hay en la oración? Continue with other sentences. 3

4 Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 1.7 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension Skill Main Idea Tell children that every book has a main idea. The main idea is what the book is mostly about. Important details tell more about the main idea. Model how to identify the main idea.
