Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Explain important text features, such as the repetition of the phrase Ayudamos a. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that in this book, the children help different people in their family do different jobs. On every page they tell who they help. Explain that the pictures in the book have labels to name people, animals, and objects. Point to the label in the illustration and read it. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. 3 Read Now have children read softly while pointing under each word. Observe children as they read. Respond to the Text Personal Response Ask children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting. Suggested language: En cuáles de las tareas que aparecen en el libro ayudan a su familia? Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text The children help the people in their family do many jobs. The children help their animals, too. A family has many jobs to do. Doing jobs together makes the work easier. The author feels that helping out in families is important. The pictures show the jobs the family does. Labels in the pictures tell the names of people, animals, and objects Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Practice early reading behaviors such as reading from left to right and understanding the concepts of letra and palabra. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Have children listen for words that rhyme. Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme, and keep their hands in their laps if the words do not rhyme. Say pairs of words, for example: mamá and papá, mamá and mano, gato and rato, gato and hoja, pez and vez, pez and hoy. Blend the Syllables Say words syllable by syllable and ask children to say the words. Begin with pa-pá. Cuál es la palabra? 4 Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 1.5 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension Skill Main Idea Tell children that most books have a main idea. The main idea is what the book is mostly about. Details tell more about the main idea. Model how to identify the main idea. Think Aloud Cuál es la idea principal del libro?
