The last picture shows them looking at a photo album of pictures the grandfather took when he was a boy. Sentence pattern introduces only one or two new words on each page. Anticipate the text with a question like: Qué cosas les gusta hacer con sus abuelos? Read the title and author and talk about the cover illustration. Ask children what the boy and his grandpa are doing in the cover illustration, and what they think the book will be about. Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that in this story, a boy tells about things Abuelo liked to do many years ago and that he and Abuelo like to do together now. 3 Read As children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem solving ability. Respond to the Text Personal Response Invite children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the story, or what they found most interesting. Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text Abuelo liked doing many things when he was a boy. Abuelo likes doing these same things with his grandson today. We never outgrow our enjoyment of some activities. Photographs are a good way to learn about family and the past. Shared activities reinforce a grandparent-child bond. The contrast between black and white and color pictures shows many years have passed. Choices for Support Concepts of Print To reinforce the direction of reading, model sweeping your hand from left to right under sentences in the story. Have children repeat the same sweeping motion from left to right. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Name the Beginning Sound Say the word gusta and ask children to repeat it. Ask children to name the beginning sound in gusta. Continue in the same way with these words: mirar, cuando, le, era, pájaros, yo, nadar, niño, pescar, deslizarse, fotos. Matching Letters Materials: upper and lower case magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Have children choose letters and match them with their upper and lower case forms. 3

4 Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 2.6 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read the directions aloud and have children complete the activities at the back of the book. Target Comprehension on Skill Understanding Characters Tell children that they can understand characters in a story by thinking about what the characters like to do. Draw a picture of one thing you think the boy will learn from Abuelo. Write about what the boy learns. 4
