Rossi Fountas-Pinnell Level I Humorous Fiction Selection Summary The zoo animals enjoy greeting visitors every morning until León arrives. When the zookeeper won t let them throw a party to welcome him, the sad animals stay hidden in their caves, which upsets the visitors. The zookeeper quickly changes his mind. From then on, the animals throw a welcome party for every new animal. por Ann M. Rossi Build Background Use children s knowledge of zoos and zoo animals to build interest by asking questions like these: Por qué a la gente le gusta visitar zoológicos? Qué hacen cuando visitan zoológicos? Read the title and author, and discuss the cover. Tell children that Una fiesta en el zoológico is humorous fiction, so it is a made-up story that is meant to make readers laugh. Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Pages 2-3: Establish setting, using the labels to introduce some characters. Suggested language: El cuento transcurre en un zoológico. Qué animales ven en las jaulas? Qué dos animales ven en el fondo? Estas personas son visitantes del zoológico. Zorra los está saludando. Qué te dice esto de los animales del cuento? Pages 4-5: Discuss the art on p. 5. 3 Read As children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem-solving ability. Remind children to use the Infer/Predict Strategy out more about story parts., using clues to figure Discuss and Revisit the Text Personal Response Invite children to share their personal responses to the story. Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, help children understand these points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text The animals at this zoo like to come out of their caves to greet visitors, which the visitors enjoy. The animals want to have a party for León, who is new, but the zookeeper says no. The sad animals hide in their caves, upsetting visitors, until the zookeeper lets them have their party. Animals that are treated well are happy animals. People like to get to know different kinds of animals. The purpose of this story is to entertain readers. Having animals that act like people talking, saying hello, planning and having a party helps make the story entertaining. The cartoon-style art, with animals slipping in and out of their cages, is also funny. Choices for Further Support Fluency Have children echo-read as you read the text on any page (except p. 10), line by line. Remind children to listen to how you read a line, imitating you as they read. Comprehension Based on your observations of the children s reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind children to go back to the text to support their ideas. Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts, using examples from the text. Remind children that words ending with a -z form the plural replacing the -z with -ces. Point to the word felices on page 9. 4 Writing about Reading Critical Thinking Have children complete the questions on Hoja reproducible Responding Have children complete the activities at the back of the book. Use the instruction below as needed to reinforce or extend understanding of the comprehension skill. Target Comprehension Skill Conclusions Remind children that they can use story details and what they know to figure out more about story characters and what is happening in a story. Remind them that when they think beyond the text, they use what they know and their own experience to think about what happens in the story. Assessment Prompts How do the animals feel after the zookeeper says they can t have a party for León?
