Some of her inventions cause more problems. But when some of Catalina inventions work, her parents decide to send her to a camp for inventors. Build interest by asking a question such as the following: Qué inventarían para solucionar un problema? Read the title and author and talk about the cover illustration. Tell children that this story is a fantasy, so things happen that could not happen in real life. Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that this is a story about a girl named Catalina who likes to invent things. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. Remind children to use the Infer/Predict Strategy figure things out as they read. and use to clues to Discuss and Revisit the Text Personal Response Invite children to share their personal responses to the story. Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, help children understand these points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text Some of Catalina inventions do not work. Catalina inventions of gluing things down and making a parachute for Fluffy do work. Mamá and Papá decide to send Catalina to a camp for inventors. It s important to have confidence in your own ideas. Don t give up if some ideas don t work out. Problems can be solved in creative ways. Creativity plays an important role in successful inventions Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, Heinemann, Portsmouth, N.H. The author s purpose is to entertain readers and show how creativity is a part of inventions. Each story episode ends with a surprise. Exclamations build excitement in the story. Choices for Further Support Fluency Invite children to choose a passage from the text to act out. Remind them to pay attention to how words are grouped together as they read dialogue and text from the story. Comprehension Based on your observations of the children s reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind children to go back to the text to support their ideas. Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts, using examples from the text. Remind children that In Spanish, syllables are made up of at least one vowel sound. For example, the word papel on page 2 is divided as pa-pel, each syllable contains a vowel. The word segunda on page 8 is divided as se-gun-da; show children that each syllable contains a vowel. 3

4 Writing about Reading Critical Thinking Have children complete the questions on Hoja reproducible Responding Have children complete the activities at the back of the book. Use the instruction below as needed to reinforce or extend understanding of the comprehension skill. Target Comprehension Skill Story Structure Remind children that thinking about the characters, setting, and events can help them understand a story. Model the skill, using a Think Aloud like the one below: Think Aloud Primero, pienso en los personajes del cuento. Son Catalina, Mamá, Papá, y las mascotas, Oscar, el perro, y Gris, la gata. Remind them that when they think beyond the text, they use what they know and their own experience to think about what the characters do and why they act as they do.
