The astronauts lives were in danger because they had no electricity, water, or oxygen. The astronauts used the lunar module as a safe place to stay until they were back on Earth. Space travel is very exciting, but it is also full of risks and challenges. Staying coolheaded and not panicking in the face of danger can save lives. The author includes lots of details about what happened to the Apollo 13 astronauts. Labels help readers understand what the photos show. The author wrote this book to make the history of the Apollo 13 mission come to life for readers. Choices for Further Support Fluency Invite children to choose a passage from the text and demonstrate phrased fl uent reading. Remind them to stress words in a meaningful way and to use punctuation in a way that shows they understand what they are reading. Comprehension Based on your observations of the children s reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind children to go back to the text to support their ideas. Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts, using examples from the text. Remind children that some phrases are formed by prepositions, such as de, para, por.
