La condición para iniciar un proceso de reciclaje es la separación de la basura. Hay distintos grados de separación, la más simple, pero sumamente útil, consiste en distinguir entre residuos orgánicos e inorgánicos. Orgánicos: Los podemos identificar como aquellos de origen animal y vegetal. Por ejemplo: cáscaras de frutas y verduras, cascarones de huevo, sobrantes de comida, servilletas de papel usadas, residuos de café, bolsitas de té, pasto, hojas, ramas y flores entre otros. Inorgánicos: Bolsas, empaques y envases de plástico, vidrio, papel, cartón y metales. Casi todos los residuos inorgánicos se pueden reciclar cuando están libres de materia orgánica
