To be a Catholic is not just about to follow rules and precepts. Religion is something beyond legalistic liturgies or moral principles: it is an encounter with the Risen Lord - an encounter capable to change your life. This is why in today`s Gospel Jesus wants to correct his followers, Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. This crowd was following Jesus because they have seen his miracles, especially the multiplication of the loaves. Maybe we too follow Christ for the benefits he can give us: better jobs, health, and good school for our children. These are all good things. But to follow Christ should be for another reason. What does Christ did in my life? What did he change in my life? To be Christian is to be free to give one`s life for our neighbor according to one`s vocation. The true Catholic is the one who entrusts himself totally to the will of God, accepting everything that happens in his life. Therefore, even good things like family, children, wife and indeed, our very life, cannot be obstacles for our relationship with Christ. This is why we cannot love our affections or material things more than God. If He lives in me, how can I be afraid to follow Him? Since He gave totally himself to us, how can I be afraid to leave everything and follow Him?

4 Page 4 Twenty third Sunday Ordinary Time September 4, 2016 VIGÉSIMO TERCERO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO Qué quiere decir ser Cristiano? El ser Católico no significa simplemente seguir leyes y reglas. La religión es algo que va mucho más allá de un legalismo litúrgico y moral: es un encuentro con el Resucitado un encuentro que te cambia la vida haciéndote discípulo de la Resurrección. Por eso que en este Evangelio Jesús tiene que corregir los que los siguen: Junto con Jesús iba un gran gentío, y Él, dándose vuelta, les dijo: Cualquiera que venga a mí y no me ame más que a su padre y a su madre, a su mujer y a sus hijos, a sus hermanos y hermanas, y hasta a su propia vida, no puede ser mi discípulo. El que no carga con su cruz y me sigue, no puede ser mi discípulo. Este gentío seguía a Cristo porque habían visto milagros y comido de la multiplicación milagrosa del pan. Quizás nosotros también seguimos a Jesús porque las cosas nos vayan bien, para conseguir un trabajo mejor, para que mi esposa cambie o para que mis hijos se gradúen. Cómo es que conoce a Cristo? Qué ha cambiado en tu vida? Ser Cristiano es abandonarse en las manos de Dios renunciando uno a sus planes y sin exigir nada en cambio. El Cristiano renuncia a su voluntad y cree ciegamente en la Divina Providencia. Si crees que Cristo se ha entregado totalmente a ti, posees entonces todo, en esta vida y en la vida futura. Si tengo a Cristo de verdad en mí, como puedo ser pegado al dinero? O esclavo del alcohol, del sexo inmoral, de la droga? Jesús quiere mucho al gentío que lo seguía; no quiere que se equivoquen. Si te has encontrado con Cristo entonces eres libre de verdad! Y esta libertad no solamente te hace amar a Dios sobre todas las cosas, pero hace de manera que nada sea un obstáculo entre ti y tu creador. Ese es el riesgo: pensar de seguir a Cristo sin uno renunciar a su idolatría. Quieres ser libre de amar a tu hermana, a tu hermano, a tu esposa?
