Message from Superintendent Daniel Warwick Dear Parents and Guardians, Students, Springfield Public School Staff and the Springfield Community, Welcome to the 2013-14 school year! Our promise is to create a culture of equity and proficiency to raise the bar for all of our students. But teachers and students are not the only ones charged with the important responsibility of teaching and learning. To borrow from an adage, it takes a village to raise a child. Springfield Public Schools stands proud of our efforts to engage parents and other caring adults as partners in their student s education. The Springfield Parent Academy (SPA) is a cornerstone of such efforts. Founded three years ago as a community initiative with more than 52 partners, the Springfield Parent Academy is committed to motivating, engaging and educating not only students but the entire Springfield community one parent, one family at a time. The energy and promise of this initiative was present from the start and its momentum has continued to build. To date, the SPA has offered more than 250 free courses and featured dozens of public speakers. The SPA has provided a myriad of resources through offering free courses such as Homework Survival Guide for Parents, Roadmap to College, and Your Family s Health on the Internet. To date, more than 2,000 people have taken advantage of the Springfield Parent Academy. In fact, the demand for programming reached such a high that SPA organizers last year launched Courses on Wheels, courses with front door delivery whether that is a church, apartment complex or community meeting space. The expansion of the SPA is proof positive of our community s drive to continue striving for new heights. Special Message As we approach the 2013-14 school year, I hope you all share my excitement and optimism about what lies ahead. Springfield Public Schools has implemented a process of continuous improvement and we are working hard to strengthen the social, emotional and academic status for all our students. We must all do our part as partners laying the groundwork for the future of our young people, our families and our community. So, for those of you who will be new the SPA this year, I offer a very warm welcome. For those of you who are returning, I enthusiastically welcome you back. And for all of you, I wish you an empowered and inspired year! Sincerely, Daniel J. Warwick Superintendent of Springfield Public Schools 2
