1 YALE UNIVERSITY ELEMENTARY SPANISH I: SPAN S110 SUMMER 2014 Instructors: Ricardo Monsalve C. & Anita Savo SPAN S110 Section: 01 Time: 9:00 12:00 Office hours: Contact information: / Office location: SYLLABUS 1 I.- Course Description. Spanish 110 has been designed to help students develop fluency in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish, as well as promote an initial encounter with the cultures of the Spanish speaking world. You will receive 1 ½ credits for this course when you finish the following course, SPAN S120. The class is conducted in Spanish and students are expected to use it in class. II.- Course objectives. Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to perform at a Novice High or Intermediate Low level (ACTFL guidelines, 2012). The learning objectives for this course include the use of basic, concrete vocabulary (e.g., family, colors, places, weather, clothing items, classes, daily routine, food, celebrations, health, etc.); the use of basic grammar and functions (e.g., describing in the present and narrating a little in the past using regular verbs, irregular verbs, reflexive verbs, and stem-vowel changing verbs; expressing likes and emotions; use of direct and indirect object pronouns; use of basic prepositions and linking devices; etc.); the ability to understand basic conversations, read, and understand basic texts, and write at an elementary level; and the learning of cultural practices, perspectives and products of different Spanishspeaking countries. Because of its fast pace, preparation in advance is essential. III.-Materials: 1.- Textbook package: Blanco & Donley s Aventuras [4 th ed.], loose-leaf format plus Supersite Plus Code with WebSAM (ISBN: ) for approximately $195 at Yale Bookstore and outside vendors as well (including the textbook website Hardcover format for about $ SPAN S110 Course Packet from Tyco (262 Elm Street), usually around$20 (bound). 3.- We recommend to buy a binder to keep your loose-leaf textbook. We also recommend the Oxford dictionary not the mini version. You will use it during in-class compositions and in future semesters. NOTE: Should you decide to purchase a used textbook from Amazon.com or a similar website, you MUST acquire additionally a valid Supersite code with WebSAM, which costs $115. IV.- Course Policies. A) Self-placement. Self-placement in Spanish is not allowed and students who do so will receive NO credit for the class. You must attend the course you pre-registered in or placed in via our Placement Test. If you took Spanish before somewhere else, you MUST take the Placement Test. B) Attendance. Departmental policy requires that students attend classes on a daily basis. Regular attendance is crucial to the successful attainment of the course objectives. You are allowed a maximum of one (1) unexcused absence over the course of the semester, which may include sick days, errands, trips, conferences, etc. You will only be able to make up graded assignments if you have an official valid excuse (e.g., Dean s excuse, jury duty appointment, coach s note, religious holy days upon notification to the instructor, etc.). Additionally, three (3) late arrivals will count as one absence. Leaving class early requires permission from the instructor. Coming to class after 20 minutes will be considered an absence. 1 This syllabus is subject to modification at the instructors discretion. 1
2 After your allotted unexcused absence, a penalty of -1 point (per absence) will be applied to the final grade. If you accrue significant absences over the ones allowed, your instructor may request that you withdraw from the course. C) Grading. Grades are not curved or rounded up in any way at any time of the semester. Extra credit assignments will not be provided. Grade distribution in this course is as follows: 1. Class participation and preparation (2 x 5%) 10% 2. Writing assignments (2 x 7.5%) 15% 3. Homework (Supersite) 10% 4. Quizzes (4 x 10%) 40% 5. Oral Exam (1) 10% 6. Final Exam (1) 15% TOTAL 100% A = A- = B+ = B = B- = C+ = C = C- = D+ = D = D- = F = below 60 D) Communications. Communications will take place through ClassesV2 at In the Gradebook section, you will find all your grades as assignments are completed. E) Components. 1. Class participation: It refers to your willingness to ask and answer questions, attitude when working with others, use of Spanish, participation in activities, extra homework completion, level of interest in the class and preparation in advance. You will be evaluated in the middle of the semester and at the end. A rubric for assessment can be found in the Course Packet Appendices. 2. Compositions: There will be two (2) in-class, open-book compositions this semester. Your instructor will mark the errors in the first draft and return it a few days later for you to correct those errors in a second draft. Depending on the number of successful corrections, your initial grade will increase up to 3 points. A rubric can be found in the Appendices of your Course Packet. 3. Homework: These are the exercises assigned on the Supersite ( Homework MUST be done on the day assigned in the syllabus, before midnight with exception of Friday s homework, which can be done during the weekend as well. A penalty of -20% per day late will be applied. This penalty also applies to students with valid excuses to miss class. 4. Quizzes: There will be four (4) quizzes during the semester. Each will cover the two previous chapters and will evaluate grammar, vocabulary, and culture. 5. Oral exam: There will be one (1) oral exam at the end of the semester.
