DESCRIPCIÓN DEL CURSO En este curso, el estudiante adquirirá habilidades en el lenguaje (en forma escrita y oral) para que pueda llevar a cabo distintas actividades diarias por medio del aprendizaje y práctica de estructuras gramaticales y vocabulario a nivel elemental. El estudiante también aprenderá o estudiará aspectos sociales y culturales necesarios para sobrevivir en un ambiente de habla inglesa. 3. GENERAL OBJECTIVE The student will master all four language skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing) at an elementary level. 4. 3 6. METHODOLOGY The course takes into account a learner-centered methodology which highlights intercultural aspects. Students are motivated through a variety of activities which enable them the discovery of the structure or meaning in the target language. These activities include oral and written texts that allow students to build up their own learning to successfully interact in English. The four skills of language plus structures are developed after the students previous knowledge has been practiced. All this in a given context which deals with aspects of interest for the students such as work, studies, and daily life. 3

8 Teléf: ASSESSMENT 7.1 EVALUATION ACTIVITIES The student will be assessed through a variety of activities that include, among others, the following: - oral work, - reading controls - group work - unit quizzes, - homework - midterm oral and a written exam, - presentations - laboratory work, - written production - a final oral and a final written exams. - grammar and vocabulary exercises 7.2 EVALUATION DATES REGULAR COURSES LEVELS 1-4 From Monday, August 16 to Friday, December 17, Midterm written exam: Monday, October 11. Midterm oral exam: Tuesday 12 and Wednesday, October 13. Submitting grades: From Wednesday 13 to Tuesday, October 19. Submitting class participation grade: Tuesday, December 7, Final written exam: Monday, December 13, Final oral Exam: Wednesday, 15 and Thursday, December 16, Submitting grades: From Friday, 17 to December 23, GRADING SYSTEM In order to pass the course, students must obtain a minimum of 30/50 points. Grades are distributed as follows: Classwork: Homework, quizzes 9 points 5 or 10 hours of lab work with Ellis Intro* 1 point Midterm written exam 10 Midterm oral exam 10 Final written exam 10 Final oral exam 10 TOTAL 50 *Students of the regular courses have to work 5 hours of Ellis Intro. 8

9 Teléf: Important note: If a student misses a quiz which forms part of the grade for class work or misses to hand in a piece of homework, then it is up to the teacher to allow the student to take the quiz afterwards or accept the homework. The grade for class work has to be handed in 7 days before the final exam. ATTENDANCE Students are permitted up to TEN absences per course. If a student is more than 10 minutes late, s/he is considered to be absent. If a student has ELEVEN to TWENTY absences, s/he has to get 40 over 50 points to pass the course.
