1 Connection from School to Home Grade 5 Math Module 2 Topic A Multiplying by 10 and 100 on a Place Value Chart Here is a simple activity to help your child learn about multiplying by 10 and 100. Here is what you do: You will need 12 playing chips (or dry beans, pennies, checkers, etc.) Step 1: Tell your child to use the chips to show 0.5 on the place value chart. Prepare a white board or sheet of paper with the following chart: hundreds tens ones tenths hundreds tens ones tenths Step 2: Tell your child to move the chips so to show what happens if you multiply the number of chips by 10. Ask them to give you the number sentence. Answer: 0.5 x 10 = 5 hundreds tens ones tenths Step 3: Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to practice the following multiplication problems: Did your child like these activities? 3 Connection from School to Home Grade 5 Math Module 2 Topic B Room Dimensions with Mental Multiplication Here is a fun activity to help your child learn about mental multiplication and area calculations. Here is what you do: For this activity, your child will use their feet as the unit of measurement to compare the areas of 2 rooms. It would be helpful to have a notepad to write down the dimensions as you work through the activity. Step 1: Tell your child to choose 2 rooms in the house that are similar in size and guess which room has a bigger surface area. Then ask your child to measure the dimensions of the rooms using their own feet as the unit. They should round to the nearest foot. Step 2: After finding the dimensions, ask your child if their prediction from Step 1 has changed. Tell them your prediction. Step 3: Help your child determine the surface area of each room without using a calculator. Your child has learned different strategies to multiply mentally. For example, if the dimensions are 15 X 9, they should recognize that it is the same as 15 less than 15 X 10. Who guessed the right answer? Did your child like these activities? Here is what you do: If you can find a yardstick, have it available for your child to check their answers in this activity. Step 1: Ask your child, 12 inches is the same as how many feet? (1 foot) Step 2: Repeat the process for: 24 in 36 in 48 in 120 in Let your child check each answer on the yardstick. Discuss with your child how they could check the answers to 48 inches and 120 inches, since the yardstick ends at 36 inches. Examples They could see that 48 = 2 x 24, so they could double their answer for 24 inches. Step 3: Ask your child, 1 foot is the same as how many inches? (12 inches) Repeat the process and answer check procedure for: 2 ft 2.5 ft 3 ft 3.5 ft 4 ft 4.5 ft 9 ft 9.5 ft If they know that 12 inches is 1 foot, and 120 inches is the same as 10 copies of 12 inches, then they just have to multiply by 10 their conversion of 12 inches. Here is what you do: This is an activity that you can do the next time you are in a grocery store or any place that sells snack foods. Tell your child to imagine that you are planning a party and expect about 20 people to attend (including the two of you). Step 1: Tell your child that you want to serve potato chips at the party, and you want to buy enough chips so that everyone can have at least 2 servings of chips. Ask your child, How many total servings do we need? (40) Step 2: Looking at a bag of chips, ask your child: Step 3: Ask your child: How many servings are in 1 bag? How many bags do you need to buy for the party? (Remember, you want 2 servings x 20 people = 40 servings.) How many chips are in 1 serving? How many chips will each person get if they eat 2 servings? 9 Connection from School to Home Grade 5 Math Module 2 Topic E Group Counting by Multiples of 10 Here is a simple activity to help your child learn about group counting by multiples of 10. Here is what you do: Step 1: Have your child review multiples of 3 by counting by threes up to 30. Step 2: Tell your child you want them to count by 3 tens and to stop when you raise your hand. 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30 Step 3: Tell your child to start counting at 3 tens. Raise your hand when your child gets to 9 tens. Then ask your child to say 9 tens in standard form. (90) Give them this example: 3 tens, 6 tens, 9 tens, etc. Step 4: Tell your child to continue counting by 3 tens. Stop and ask your child to say the number in standard form when they reach: 15 tens (150) 24 tens (240) 30 tens (300) Did your child like these activities? YES NO Was the activity easy to do? Here is what you do: You will need: a 1-dollar bill 12 dimes *You could use playing chips to represent dimes if you can t find enough of them. Step 1: Review with your child the value of a dime compared to a dollar. What part of a dollar does a dime represent? (1 tenth) Step 2: Ask your child to show you $1.20 using a combination of bill(s) and coins. Then ask your child, Would you be able to split the money evenly among 4 people using the dollar bill and coins? (No) Step 3: Tell your child to trade the dollar bill for coins so that they have $1.20, all in dimes. Then ask your child, Now do you think you could separate the money into four equal groups? (Yes) Have your child show you how to divide the money four ways. Ask, How much money does each person get? ($0.30 or 30 ) Then ask what the division sentence would be for this problem, saying the numbers first as decimals and then as fractions.
