1 AP Spanish Literature and Culture Syllabus I. Course overview The Advanced Placement Spanish Literature and Culture course is intended to be the equivalent of a third-year college Introduction to Spanish literature, covering a wide variety of works from the literature of Spain, North, Central and South America. Students use their Spanish speaking, writing, reading skills in every aspect of the class; they read Spanish Literature and then analyze it using both oral and written techniques. In addition, the students will explore interdisciplinary connections with the literature studied and other aspect of expressions like art, movies, architecture and music. By the end of the advanced placement course their language proficiency is equivalent to a fifth or sixth Semester College Spanish course. The function of the Advanced Placement Spanish Literature course is to prepare students: 1. to understand a lecture conducted 100% in Spanish everyday and to participate actively in discussions on literary topics in the target language 2. to speak exclusively Spanish in class on a daily basis while analyzing (interpersonal), interpreting, presenting the studied work 3. to do a close reading of literary texts in their full form not abbreviated version 4. to address the six themes, incorporate the organizing concepts for contextual connection among the works and to use the essential questions to create conversation, investigation and connections 5. to emphasize contextual analysis and to relate what is being read to literary, historical, socio-cultural and geopolitical context 6. to use appropriate terminology to critically analyze the form and content of literary works (including poetry),orally and in writing. 7. to be able to compare and contrast among the periods, genres and points of view of the different works read. II. Course Requirement Students need to have taken Spanish 4 AP Language. If students have not taken 4 AP, they are responsible for reading the readings that the students read in the class. Course Planner At the beginning of the school year, the students will take a look of the literary work that will be studied through the year. The students will begin working with familiarization of the six required themes: Las relaciones interpersonales, La dualidad del ser, Las sociedades en contacto, La creación literaria, El tiempo y el espacio and La construcción del género. The word Culture will be examined with a close look at how it interconnects to all of the themes, subthemes and the Works studied. The class is conducted entirely in Spanish and the students are expected and encouraged to exclusively use Spanish while analyzing, interpreting and presenting the Spanish literature works. Los estudiantes analizarán el tema de la ironía presentado en la pintura de El ciego en Toledo de Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida y la compararán con la del ciego en Lazarillo de Tormes. Repaso de todas las obras y temas para el examen de AP Repaso para el examen final del semestre (algunos estudiantes no se eximen) IV Teaching Strategies: All of these activities and strategies are used in class using the three modes of communications in Spanish Debates: Students will benefit tremendously using debates to discuss characters, themes, subthemes, heroes, antiheroes, etc in class. Debates will be used weekly if possible. (Conducted in Spanish) Literary analysis: They do one per each of the studied works. At the end of year they have their booklet with the most important information about the readings. (They turn this in at the end of each semester for a test grade) Análisis de Preparación para la clase de Literatura y Cultura: binder where the students keep written record of what he/she has read. The análisis literario is a detailed record of all the work read. (Título de la obra, tipo de obra, autor, periodo, personajes, tono, ambiente, tema central, subtemas, recursos literarios, símbolos y pregunta(s) esencial(es)) (see page 15) Pecha Kucha: 10 slides representing the story and 20 seconds to talk about each slide. The focus of the 20 seconds is to talk about argument, tone, theme and other resources found in the work. (see page 16) (Presentation is conducted in Spanish) Gato Literario: It is a theme organizer. It contains 9 squares. In the four outer squares, the name of the author, or the name of the works is written. The intention is to write single words that come to mind about the work, the students write as many as possible. In the square in between the upper part, student writes sentences that connects both works and authors and so on with all the spaces in the middle. In the center, the students write in black the ideas that connect all four works. Students use different pen colors to fill out each square. In class, it is used to compare and contrast some of the works read in class. (see page 12) (In Spanish) Film clip: Used to capture, reinforce or show the work studied in class. Videos of Interviews with different authors: different interviews found in YouTube so that students can be exposed to comments of the authors and what they have to express about their work.
11 Music: use as a form of connection and contextualization with different literature works. Example; Serrat and Machado. Centón Latino: It is a poetry creation that is based on random verses from other poems. The only thing that is allowed is to ad or eliminates conjunctions. This is a very interesting exercise because allows the student or writers to be creative and allows him/her to really organize somebody else s ideas. In class, it is used for teaching and reinforcing poetry. Having students create their own poetry is very useful in order to understand some of the Works read in class. Shadow Theater: Used to reinforce argument, sound, voices, images and music to the plot of some of the work. (In Spanish) V. Student Evaluation: 1) Each six weeks the students write two essays in class about the works studied during the six week. The essays are structured with the format of the AP Literature exam. 2) After each of the works studied the students will have a short answer question structured with the format of the AP Literature exam. 3) They have quizzes after each one of the works studied. (some multiple choice or questionnaire) 4) Listening activities (interviews with authors). Questions and answers after discussion of the interviews. 5) They complete an analysis literary for each of the work and will keep an organized binder with the work studied so that they can use the binder to study and review the work throughout the year. 6) Class discussions about the works on daily basis (Socrates seminars with the themes, subthemes and the essential questions). 7) District examinations with an essay and questionnaire about the work read during the semester. 8) Class presentations. 9) Análisis de Preparación (Binder with the literary analysis) collected and graded once per semester. Hay una razón u ocasión para el poema Hay evidencia de lugar, tiempo, estación o situación 4. Qué pasa durante el poema? Hay conflictos Ocurre un evento Es en el pasado o el presente Es interno o externo 5. Qué motiva al hablante a hablar ahora, y qué tono usa? Tiene el hablante una actitud o es parcial hacia un tema Que contribuye al tono del hablante 6. Cómo contribuye el lenguaje poético al significado del poema? Hay algo distintivo sobre el poema Repite el poeta palabras, sonidos, frases o ideas 7. Cómo está organizado el poema? Tiene una forma especifica como soneto o redondilla Se toma libertades el poeta? Es gramatical? Tiene estructura con oraciones completas o con una mezcla de usos? 8. Contribuyen los patrones del ritmo y rima al significado y efecto del poema? Cómo funciona la rima en el poema?
