1 San Francisco Unified School District Bret Harte Elementary School Ms. Vidrale Antoinette Franklin, Principal Principal s Introduction Our mission at Bret Harte Elementary School is to provide students with high academic standards, a positive learning environment and a safe campus. Each child's education is important to us. We aim to create meaningful learning experiences for every child through purposeful instruction. Children are taught to become fluent and confident readers, writers and speakers. In mathematics, students learn basic facts, algorithms and mathematical concepts that can be applied to real-life situations. We promote citizenship and leadership abilities, as is evident in students' daily conduct on campus. Last Year s Best Achievements We have developed and implemented comprehensive programs in reading and mathematics. In-depth professional development is provided for all teachers in literacy and mathematics. We have implemented a comprehensive extended-day program to serve the academic needs of all Bret Harte students as well as provide students with enrichment activities. Key elements include our Safe School Committee, Emergency Response Team, Crisis Response Team, and Student Council. Each year we implement tobacco, drug and violence prevention programs and other health related programs for students at all grade levels. Conflict resolution skills are taught to students through various programs such as Second Step at the primary level and the Conflict Manager's Program for intermediate students. The Bret Harte Anti-Slur Policy is enforced by all staff as an integral learning tool. Students and staff take responsibility for creating and maintaining a safe and clean learning environment. Many opportunities exist for parent involvement, most notably in the Bret Harte Family, on our School Site Council and by assisting in classrooms. A Parent Liaison works closely with parents/caregivers, structuring unique involvement activities such as 'A Second Cup of Coffee.' A Parent Room is available as a comfortable space for parents to review resources, attend workshops, and discuss relevant issues. School Description School Vision / Tucked away in the southeast corner of the city near the shores of the bay, Bret Harte Elementary School offers a culturally rich learning environment that focuses on high academic and social expectations for all students. The Bret Harte community inspires, supports and nurtures learners on a journey toward excellence. We believe in the incredible potential of all children and are committed to providing academically challenging, culturally relevant learning options which fully develop the unique talents and gifts of each child in our program. High academic standards guide the curriculum across all grades. Every grade, from kindergarten to fifth, includes projects, cross-curricular activities, service learning, field trips, and interaction among grade levels. We strive for academic excellence for the entire school population through involving school, home, and community. We are committed to developing a safe learning environment with a challenging curriculum including the visual and performing arts. La educación de cada estudiante es importante para nosotros. Nuestra meta es la de educar a cada uno a través de una enseñanza que conlleve un propósito. A los alumnos se les da la formación para que sepan desenvolverse como oradores, escritores y lectores. En matemáticas, los estudiantes aprenden los conceptos básicos, tales como, algoritmos y aquéllos que se pueden aplicar en situaciones de la vida real. Promovemos la conducta apropiada y el liderazgo, lo que se evidencia diariamente en la forma que se conducen en el campus. Logros Sobresalientes del Año Pasado Desarrollamos e incrementamos un programa completo de lectura y matemáticas. A los profesores se les capacita en temas de alfabetización y matemáticas. Implementamos un programa de aprendizaje suplementario que responde a las necesidades académicas de todos los estudiantes, además, les proveemos actividades de enriquecimiento. Los componentes clave de la seguridad de nuestra escuela consiste en, un comité que da respuestas a las situaciones de emergencia, un grupo que responde a las situaciones de crisis y el comité estudiantil. Cada año, se ponen en práctica los programas de prevención del uso del tabaco, las drogas y la violencia, así como, otros programas de salud para todos los grados. A los estudiantes se les enseña a resolver conflictos por medio de varios programas, tales como, Segundo Paso para los estudiantes de grados inferiores y el de resolución de conflictos para los de grados superiores. La escuela tiene un reglamento en contra de las ofensas, el cual lo aplica el personal como una herramienta integral de la enseñanza. Los estudiantes y el personal toman la responsabilidad de crear y mantener un medio ambiente de aprendizaje limpio y seguro. Programas Importantes Estudio para la enseñanza de las artes. Enfoque en el Mejoramiento Se continúa mejorando en las artes de lenguaje/lectura y matemáticas, con un énfasis específico en la escritura y en los conceptos básicos de álgebra. Se les ofrecen muchas oportunidades en las que pueden participar, entre las más notables, en la Familia de Bret Harte, el Comité Directivo de la Escuela y por medio de la ayuda en los salones de clases. El coordinador de padres de familia, trabaja con padres y encargados, quienes planifican actividades únicas de participación tales como la de la Segunda Taza de Café. También, se cuenta con un salón disponible para los padres de familia, con un espacio cómodo en donde pueden encontrar recursos, asistir a cursillos de capacitación y reunirse para conversar acerca de temas importantes. Descripción de la Escuela La escuela se encuentra ubicada en la esquina sureste de la ciudad, cerca de la costa de la bahía, nuestra escuela ofrece un medio ambiente de aprendizaje culturalmente rico que se enfoca en las expectativas sociales y académicas altas para todos los estudiantes. Nuestra comunidad educativa inspira, apoya e instruye a los educandos en su marcha hacia la excelencia. Creemos en el potencial de todos, tenemos el compromiso de proporcionar opciones académicas rigurosas, y culturalmente importantes, con el propósito de cultivar el talento y la capacidad de cada estudiante. Las normas académicas excelentes sirven de guía al plan de estudios para todos los grados. Cada grado, desde kindergarten hasta el quinto grado, participa en actividades extracurriculares, de enseñanza, en paseos escolares e interactúan entre los diferentes grados.
