1 McIntosh County Middle School Title I Parent Involvement Policy Revised: May 22, 2013 Mr. Mike Simmons, MCMS Principal Mrs. Patricia Whaley, MCMS Parent Involvement Coordinator
2 McIntosh County Middle School Title I Parent Involvement Policy The McIntosh County Middle School community recognizes the importance of parent involvement to reach individual student goals for successful completion of middle school requirements for high school and beyond. In an effort to facilitate this involvement, a plan has been formulated and is outlined in this report. Educational research clearly shows that parents who are actively involved in their child s learning at home help their children become more successful learners in and out of school. In our efforts to improve student achievement, McIntosh County Middle School has established objectives and will implement strategies to increase parent and community involvement with our school. McIntosh County Middle School has an open door policy that encourages parents to visit the school. Our parent involvement meetings and events are designed to provide them with resources and materials they need to become more effective and actively involved in their child s education. We will continue to provide our parents and community with various forms of communication and events such as: Parent/Student Handbook Monthly Calendar Flyers PTA School Council Phone Calls Agenda Parent/Teacher Conferences s Website The Darien Newspaper Local TV Station School Marquis SchoolReach Telephone System Report Cards Every Nine Weeks Progress Reports Every Three Weeks Annual Open House at the Beginning of Each School Year Annual Title I/Curriculum Parent Information Night Parent Technology Night Parent Information Nights and Parent Book Fair Night Handouts given at each of these events: Thanksgiving Luncheon, Christmas Luncheon, Grandparents Luncheon, and Bingo for Books Upcoming 6 th Grade Parent Orientation Night Honors Day Program Sports Awards Program An annual Title I meeting and subsequent communications will be held to inform parents of the school s Title I Policy, its requirements, and their right to be involved in the
3 program. McIntosh County Middle School will assist parents in the understanding of the Georgia Common Core State Standards. Information on State and local assessments used to measure student progress and the proficiency levels that the students are expected to meet is shared with parents. Title I funds will be provided for transportation as needed. Parents will be involved in planning, reviewing, and improving programs for Title I in an organized, ongoing and timely way. A written notice will be given to all parents of the students identified as needing program services. A community sponsored page will be published in the local newspaper and the county wide website will be accessed to highlight the students achievements and interpreting assessment results to monitor the progression of the school program. The school will also describe the curriculum and the assessments used by the LEA to measure student progress in meeting the State s student achievement standards. The school community will include a Parent Resource Center strategically located to facilitate parent and community involvement in the school program. The Parent Resource Center will also provide parents with information, materials, resources, and training in order to help their children with their academic success. Literacy and technology training will be provided as appropriate to foster parental involvement and increased student achievement. Through regular meetings, the school will provide the opportunity to volunteer and participate in the decision making process by offering suggestions and receiving timely feedback to their suggestions. Ideas will be shared for monitoring attendance, completing homework, and opportunities for volunteering at McIntosh County Middle School through our school wide website, monthly newspaper publication, flyers and monthly calendars. Efforts will be made to provide a supportive and effective learning environment by collaborating with the ESOL personnel and other appropriate departments to provide pertinent information for parents where English is not their first language. Parents and students with disabilities will also be accommodated with collaboration of the Special Education Department at the school and county levels. An annual survey will be sent to parents of Title I students. The data will be collected and submitted including unsatisfactory comments regarding the school plan to the LEA. To build ties between home and school, parents will assist in the professional development of activities for teachers and school staff, in the utility of contributions of parents, and in how to reach out to communicate with, and work with parents as equal partners. McIntosh County Middle School will implement and coordinate parent programs in order to build ties between home and school. In addition, formal compacts between teachers, students, and parents will be employed to specify everyone s contributing role in teaching the individual student s goals. Parent/teacher conferences will be held at least annually to relate individual student s achievement to the compact. Parents will be informed of their student s academic progress every three weeks. Parents will be encouraged to participate in their child s class and observe classroom activities. They will also be given the opportunity to suggest other activities that would provide additional parental support.
