8 Composition of ELAC Composición de ELAC Each school with 21 or more EL students must have a functioning ELAC. EL parents elect ELAC members. EL parents on ELAC must be at least same percentage as EL students in the school. Other ELAC members may include additional parents and community members. 13 Elections - Requirements for the ELAC 1. The ELAC is composed of elected members, thus elected officers = the committee. 2. All parents or guardians of ELs shall be provided the opportunity to vote for committee members. 3. The ELAC must have at least three members: chairperson, vice chairperson, secretary. 4. Ballots sent to all parents of ELs for election of officers. 5. Returned ballots counted and kept for documentation. 6. Newly-elected officers receive training about their responsibilities. 16 ELAC Requirements California ED Code/Section (SB 355 Greene) Meetings must be open to the public and allow for public input. Meeting notice and agenda must be posted at least 72 hours before the meeting. Notice and agenda must be posted at the school site or other appropriate place accessible to the public. Action cannot be taken on items not posted on agenda, UNLESS an unanimous vote finds a need for immediate action. The public must be provided access to all materials discussed and/or distributed at the meeting. 21 Parent Involvement Strategies 1. Plan meeting at a time most parents can attend. 2. Have an agenda with specific business to complete and parent/member training opportunities. 3. Have a dinner or lunches (social gatherings) 4. Have door prizes for some or all those attending (books, magazines). 5. Have a student/guest/teacher perform. 6. Have teachers share. 7.
