1 FALCON FLYER Jeffrey Brusso, Principal BOARD OF EDUCATION INFORMATION CCSD21 MONITORING STATE CHANGES TO FUNDING A Finance Committee meeting preceded the September Board of Education meeting. Changes to the state s education funding formula were discussed, which could impact programs at CCSD21. Some proposals could eliminate upwards of $9 million in funding from the District s annual budget. The Board of Education has asked the administration to explore possible solutions to address significant funding reductions and continue to monitor progress of state and federal funding reform proposals. As the District works with its legislators, the community is encouraged to contact its senators and representatives to stress the importance of education funding and the impact cuts could have on CCSD21 schools. BALANCED BUDGET PASSED The Board of Education unanimously adopted a balanced budget at its September meeting for the current fiscal year. The budget reflects the District s commitment to offering a challenging curriculum, an authentic learning environment, and a strong network of support services, while being responsible stewards of public finances. FACEBOOK & TWITTER CCSD21 is on Facebook (facebook.com/ccsd21) and Twitter (@CCSD21). Links to each can be found at: NEXT MEETING October 16, PM How are you NEU? As part of the No Excuses University Network we are committed to taking the necessary steps to become an exceptional school. We have to consistently monitor and reflect on what it is that we do that makes us a No Excuses school. We asked our staff How are you NEU? and this is what they said: Third Grade Team As a team we collaborated to create a writing lesson that allowed the students to share what career they will pursue upon graduating from college in These paragraphs will be displayed in the hall along with the children's pictures wearing graduation caps. First Grade Team As a team we have set more challenging goals for our students. We've taken virtual tours of some of our campuses. We chant...we cheer...we celebrate our successes! We set goals and our graphs will be on our doors very soon! Fourth Grade Team As a team we meet weekly to collaborate about how we can best meet the needs of our students. In addition, we have created goal books for our students where they can track their data and set learning goals. Lastly, we have learned and practiced the words to our college fight songs!! GO LOBOS, WOLVERINES, CAVALIERS, AND SPARTANS! :) Second Grade Team We as a team are creating individual data books. Each student will graph their own progress. We discuss the learner qualities that will help make a student successful. Then we collaborate with the students to determine their areas of strength and set goals for the year. Kindergarten Team Collaborate as a team weekly. Students are made accountable for their own learning through the use of monthly data books. We are in the process of creating data doors. Mrs. Miller Universal Achievement is supported throughout the school. I work with students and teachers in their classrooms and in the LMC using a variety of tools for all students to succeed.

October Healthy Topic from your School Health Office Halloween Safety A few safety tips from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission can protect children who plan to go trick-or-treating this Halloween. Treats: Warn children not to eat any treats before an adult has carefully examined them for evidence of tampering. Costume Designs: Purchase or make costumes that are light and bright enough to be clearly visible to motorists. For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car's headlights. Bags or sacks should also be light colored or decorated with reflective tape. Reflective tape is usually available in hardware, bicycle, and sporting goods stores. To easily see and be seen, children should also carry flashlights. Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling. Children should wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes. Mother' s high heels are not a good idea for safe walking. Hats and scarfs should be tied securely to prevent them from slipping over children's eyes. Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than have a child wear a loose-fitting mask that might restrict breathing or obscure vision. If a mask is used, however, make sure it fits securely and has eyeholes large enough to allow full vision. Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be of soft and flexible material. Pedestrian Safety: Young children should always be accompanied by an adult or an older, responsible child. All children should WALK, not run from house to house and use the sidewalk if available, rather than walk in the street. Children should be cautioned against running out from between parked cars, or across lawns and yards where ornaments, furniture, or clotheslines present dangers. Choosing Safe Houses: Children should go only to homes where the residents are known and have outside lights on as a sign of welcome. Children should not enter homes or apartments unless they are accompanied by an adult. People expecting trick-or-treaters should remove anything that could be an obstacle from lawns, steps and porches. Candlelit jack-o'-lanterns should be kept away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush against the flame. Indoor jack-o'-lanterns should be kept away from curtains, decorations, and other furnishings that could be ignited.
