What is Close Reading? (Fisher, Frey and Lapp 2012) Close reading is a careful and purposeful re-reading of a text. The instruction necessary to scaffold students understanding of the text. High-quality lessons with complex text Considering the sociopoltical and historical context of the text while focusing on what the author actually says. Text-dependent questions
CR is a Shift in Focus Away from the assumption that matching readers instructional level to text difficulty ensures high levels of comprehension. Away from a focus on the readers response to a deep understanding of the authors message and finding evidence and justification for their interpretation and response to text. Away from teachers telling students what the text means to having students think about and analyze what the text means and how the author conveys that meaning through the text.
Potential Benefits of CR for Biliteracy Learners Focus on comprehension vs. reading as a mechanical process (decoding, fluency, etc.) Reading for specific purposes with a view of text as a dialogue between author and reader Deep analysis of how language is used to convey meaning, including study of relationships between language structures and functions Focus on features of text that support comprehension
Potential Pitfalls of CR for Biliteracy Learners Overlooking the importance of readers background knowledge and academic content knowledge in comprehending complex informational text or assuming that all meaning resides in the text. Underestimating the difficulties posed by the linguistic complexities of text to readers whose language proficiency is not equivalent to their native English-speaking or Spanish-speaking peers. Underplaying the role of talking about the text in L1 and L2 language devepment.
Considerate Text Main ideas are explicitly stated Information found within a paragraph or section is clearly connected back to the main idea There is a logical order of events and obvious relationships between events and topics Clear references and referents are provided and ambiguous pronouns are avoided The content corresponds to the knowledge of the intended readers in terms of conceptual density, introduction of new information and validation of what the reader already knows about the topic.

Think-Pair-Share #1 What are some challenges you as a biliteracy teacher face in implementing close reading in Spanish in response to the Common Core Standards in your classroom? What benefits do you believe can be derived from close reading as an approach to biliteracy learning in your professional context?
Text Analysis for Close Reading Linguistic surface features (decodability, sentence structure, idiomatic expressions, literary devices and figurative language) Features of text that support access for ELL (graphics, organizational clues, glossary) Assessing the concept load of a text and vocabulary challenges Author s intent, purpose or function and message Text structure, style and patterns of exposition Relevant background and cultural knowledge to comprehend text

Evaluación de Lectura y Complejidad del Texto Evaluación cualitativa del texto: Niveles de significado, estructura, convencionalismo lingüístico y conocimientos requisitos Evaluación cuantitativa del texto: Complejidad del texto, frases, cohesión del texto Congruencia entre lector y tarea: Propósito de la lectura; motivación, conocimientos, experiencias del lector

Word Level Processing This level is the word recognition or vocabulary component of extracting meaning from text. Comprehension depends on decoding and triggering meaning of a sufficient number of words to grasp the meaning of the text. When a word is not known, close reading will indicate whether the word is not recognized or the concept that the word labels is not known.

Word Level CR Example Estoy esperando a que llegue PX. No sé como le hace para escabullirse hasta mi cuarto sin que nadie lo vea. PX es mi perro, y lo llamo así porque todo él es un misterio. (p. 160) En esta oración, qué significa la palabra hipótesis? (p. 161)
The Language-Concept Connection Instructional Model Use known language to teach an unknown concept. Use known concepts to teach unknown language. Domain Language Concept Learning A Unknown Unknown Limited: Modify Instruction B Known Unknown Concept Development C Unknown Known Language Development D Known Known Concept & Language Mastery
Sentence Level Processing This level of comprehension involves chunking ideas within sentences into meaningful phrases and units. The reader selects what is important about the sentence to store in short-term memory. It also involves control of syntactic patterns and unusual syntax such as idiomatic expressions.

Sentence Level CR Example Indicios: Mi mamá me dice que vende carne tan dura que parece de perro. A lo mejor, fue él quien se robó a mi perro para hacerlo bisteces. (p. 166) Por qué son indicios que le hacen al dueño de PX sospechar al carnicero lo que dijo su mamá de la carne que vende?
Paragraph Level Processing This process involves inferring connections and relationships between clauses and sentences at the multiple-sentence and paragraph levels. It requires the reader to make linkages by noticing pronoun substitutions, synonym substitutions, inferring cause and effect, and recognizing connectives such as also, however, and unless.

Paragraph Level CR Example Ahora no es uno, sino dos los perros que están perdidos: PX y Bailador. (p. 165) Qué pista para el detective hay en la descripción del perro del vecino Bailador de que hablan del mismo perro?
Discourse This level of processing involves relating to the big picture through organization of ideas from the entire text as well as smaller units. It requires use of knowledge of story structure, expository text structures, poetic formulas and genre.

Text Coherence The text coherence level of processing in CR involves going beyond literal comprehension to understanding the coherence of text and to make inferences about the author s message. It requires that readers make personal connections with what they read, using prior knowledge and making predictions. They also identify with characters and connect with their affective responses.

Dialogar con el Autor Cuál es la meta o el objetivo del autor al escribir este cuento, libro, texto? Cuál es el tema de la obra o del texto? Cómo comunica el autor su mensaje o sus ideas? Qué lenguaje usa? Cuál es la artesanía del libro, cuento o texto? Crea imágenes y emociones con su lenguaje? Qué estructura o progresión le da el autor a su texto? Desarrolla un complot? Sigue la estructura de un género literario o de una materia académica (ciencias, historia, estudios sociales)?
Think-Pair-Share #2 How you do teach your biliteracy students to comprehend and appreciate literature? What genre of literature do you teach? Does your selection of literature for your classroom include multicultural literature? In both Spanish and English? What kinds of administrative and/or professional development support for your literature program do you need in your professional context?
Planning Close Reading for Informational Text Genre and types of informational text: biographies, content-area text. Examining purposes and functions of parts of text: Paragraphs, sentences, phrases, etc. Teaching text structure and its relationship to ideas and concepts. Explicit teaching of new vocabulary and semantic analysis strategies for figuring out unfamiliar words.
