1 Did You Get It? AVANZA! Goal: Level 1 pp Level 1B pp Presentación de vocabulario Learn the words to talk about sports. Sports Different sports require different equipment for players (los jugadores), and different places for playing. Study the chart below. Where Played el básquetbol (basketball) el béisbol (baseball) el bate (bat) el casco (helmet) (glove) el campo (field) el fútbol americano (football) el casco (helmet) el campo (field) el estadio (stadium) la natación (swimming) el traje de baño (swimsuit) la piscina (pool) patinaje en línea (inline skating) (inline skates) el tenis (tennis) (racket) el voleibol (volleyball) There are other words and expressions you can use to talk about sports. Learn some of these words in the paragraph below. There are two ways to enjoy sports (los deportes). One is to be a player (un jugador); the other is to be a spectator, or fan. Fans, or aficionados, as they are called in both Spanish and English, understand well the rules of the game (comprenden bien las reglas del partido). Some sports can be more dangerous (peligrosos) than others. All athletes (atletas), not just champions (los campeones), play to to win (ganar). Do you have favorite sport (un deporte favorito)? Do you play on team (un equipo)? Do you like to to lose (perder)? s1rb_0600_dygi.indd 1 Equipment Needed Sports 1 9/14/06 8:18:57 PM

Necesito una racket para jugar al tenis. Para jugar al fútbol americano necesitamos helmets. jugadora Tengo que comprar un glove para jugar al béisbol. 5 Choose an appropriate response for each statement. El equipo de Luis gana hoy. a. 4 Level 1 p. 304 Level 1B p. 107 Recuerdas? Numbers from 200 to 1,000,000 You have learned how to count from 200 to 1,000,000. Recall how to count by hundreds below ,000 1,000,000 cien doscientos trescientos cuatrocientos quinientos seiscientos setecientos ochocientos novecientos mil un millón (de) 10 s1rb_0600_dygi.indd 10 1 Write out how many pesos the following items cost. 9/14/06 8:19:32 PM
5 Level 1 p. 306 Level 1B p. 109 Recuerdas? Using gustar with nouns When one thing is liked You use gustar to say that you or others like something. When more than one thing is liked (I like baseball.) (You like baseball.) (He likes baseball.) Me gustan los bates. (I like the bats.) Te gustan los bates. (You like the bats.) Le gustan los bates. (He likes the bats.) Nos gusta el béisbol. Os gusta el béisbol. Les gusta el béisbol. (We like baseball.) (You like baseball.) (They like baseball.) Nos gustan los bates. (We like the bats.) Os gustan los bates. (You like the bats.) Les gustan los bates. (They like the bats.) Me gusta el béisbol. Te gusta el béisbol. Le gusta el béisbol. EXPLANATION: No matter who likes baseball, the verb is always singular (gusta), and no matter who likes the bats, the verb is always plural (gustan). In other words, gustar agrees with what is liked, not with who does the liking. Práctica 1 Would you use gusta or gustan in a sentence to say that... you like apples? everyone likes ice cream? they like football? my uncle likes sports? she likes the car? my aunt likes the theater? Juan likes bicyles? we like movies? my parents like tennis? I like everything? 2 Answer the questions in complete sentences. Te gustan los deportes? Te gusta el básquetbol? Te gusta el voleibol? Te gustan los partidos de tenis? Te gustan las piscinas? 3 Translate the following sentences. I like this racket. The team likes the swimming pool. We like this baseball field.
